ReflectionsOctober 11, 2002 Mr Martin A Richards 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
In 1980 Rick Ridgeway's close friend, Johnathon Wright dies in his arms after they are both swept down a remote Tibetan mountain in an avalanche. Nineteen years later Rick takes Johnathon's daughter (now 20 years old) on a trip to Tibet to find her father's grave. In going on this trip Rick Ridgeway goes through a series of mid-life reflections on his life and the nature of adventure. He recounts many of his earlier trips in the book, weaving them logically into the narrative of this journey.
The book is well written and takes the reader effortlessly into the wild landscapes and dangerous situations that have been the key part of Ridgeway's life. It also sensitively describes the relationship between Ridgeway and Asia (Johnathon's daughter), Asia's growing understanding of the person her father was and finally the emotional trauma of finding his grave. It is by far the best book written by Ridgeway and in places is a beautiful evocation of a life spent chasing the dream of adventure.
