good but not brillant June 22, 2008 SKWATSON (UK) 0 out of 5 found this review helpful
This book has only the basic for starting you doing your own live show but it lacks real preparation for beginners. It assumes that you are already a star and touring or have the skills! However, I prefer the book 'An essential guide for serious singers and musicians' The latter contains provable technique that works! It covers the legal aspect of the music business, how to get yourself out off shark like contracts and getting yourself on radio. I wish I had bought this book first 'an essential guide for serious singers and musicians' before touring as i would have known how gritty and dark the world of the music industry is. An essential guide for serious singers and musicians tells it as it is with no gloss and sheen talk it gets his hands dirty where other book fails and it will leave you empowered and ready for success. I already have a record company interested in me and all because I have followed the right techniques this great book says. You also am told how to protect your work, and organisation that will help you do it. It really is the musicians bible. If you want to also know how the record industry rips you off then this book is a must I couldn't recommend it enough. Forget the first book and go for the latter you won't regret it. You can get this also through amazon

The most informative book I've read April 25, 2005 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
I've read quite a few books on the music industry but this is the only one which actually gives an in depth knowledge of how you approach the business. It caters for both U.S. and U.K. citizens so nothings mixed up and the invaluable advice given by donald passman isn't wrapped up in complex jargon.
A valuable resource, can't recommend it highly enough. December 7, 2004 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
This book has been invaluable in my study of the music business. It's easy to digest, thanks to the author's light-hearted and good-humoured approach, to even the most complex of issues. Things are broken down into easy-to-understand sections, and you are given the option of covering the basics and moving on, or exploring issues in a greater depth with extended reading sections. This book is a must for anyone studying music, or interested in becoming successful in any of the four key theatres of the industry.
Priceless. August 24, 2004 Renato Uccellini (North East, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A truly comprehensive work that has illuminated much. You will be fighting in the dark without this book by your side if your career relies on generating income through the exploitation of recorded music.
