3 out of 5 stars Misleading title   September 21, 2008

The title and description of the book lead me to believe that the story would focus mainly on the Phoebe, which is what lead me to read this book. I thought reading about the challenges that she faced in everyday life would have made a very interseting story. However, the book does not really focus on Phoebe at all, it focuses on David, Nora and Paul. Yet, the challenges of their lives and the parts which I wanted to read more on were skimmed over. We never really get to know the characters as 25 years is skimmed over in 400 pages with not enough detail on the more interesting aspects of the plot. I would still recommend this book as a light read as it is an interesting idea and still made me think about how a disability affects the family and not just the person but would advise people not to listen to the hype - if they do they will be disapointed

4 out of 5 stars interestingly moving....   September 6, 2008

I wasn't really sure what I thought about this book - read it months ago - but as time goes on the more I think I liked it. It isn't thrilling or exciting, but you really do go through a journey with the story line and plot. It kept me questioning what I would do in the different situations, and although it is set more than forty years ago, you do wonder how much times and prejudices have altered or not, as the case may be. I can see why the book received mixed reviews, but my advice is buy it, read it, and judge for yourself. It will definately have you thinking.

4 out of 5 stars The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Rosemary Morris author of Tangled Hearts set in Queen Anne's England 1702-1714   September 2, 2008

In 1964 if you delivered your son during a snowstorm assisted by one nurse and then delivered your daughter who suffered from Down's Syndrome what would you do?

Would you, like David, in accordance with the custom of the day order the nurse to place your daughter in a home? David, who has never come to terms with the death of his sister who had a heart problem, does that and tells his wife the baby died.

His decision and the nurse's decision not to put the baby in care will affect not only the rest of his life but that of his family and that of the nurse and his daughter.

The prose is compelling and the story remains in the mind long after the last page is read,

Rosemary Morris

2 out of 5 stars Surprisingly disappointed.   September 2, 2008

Having read the many glowing reviews, I was looking forward to reading this on my holiday. Unfortunately, it was not what I was expecting. I found it to be quite a drawn out affair, far slower than it needed to be, with big gaps on the odd occasion there was cause for more detail. I'm sure it was quite enjoyable for the many who have reviewed it positively, but for me it was a bit of a chore. The term that springs to mind is "chick-lit" and I guess at the end of the day, it's not what I was hoping for.
