fantastic August 14, 2006 kimmy (england) Expertly written, you become ingrossed with each character, wanting to see what will happen next, this is my first Jodi Picoult book and I will def be reading more from her
Unputdownable February 16, 2006 I stumbled upon Jodi Picoult at Christmas when I was given Plain Truth, and now I'm hooked. I'd recommend reading The Pact first as some of the characters cross over. Salem Falls is a novel that looks at an alleged incident from different stand points, and leaves you thinking how much of what we believe is based on hearsay or our preconceptions. Set in a small American picture book town, all their lives have touched one another at some point. Investigating the deepest of emotions you can’t help but become engrossed in the characters lives. Interwoven through is the life story of the accused told back to front, and leads you to understand more about him and his thinking as the story is told. In this novel what strikes you is how she gets into teenagers heads and understands how they think, act and react. As with the two other books I’ve read there are some loose ends that other authors may have wanted to tidy up, but the fact not everything is sorted out makes it a better story in my opinion. I didn't think I'd have any sympathy for Jack St Bride but the cleverness of the ‘did he? - didn't he?’ makes Salem Falls unputdownable.
"The Crucible" has been brought bang up to date! February 2, 2006 Lucy Drysdale Last year in Higher Drama, my teacher said that "The Crucible" was not a play you could update easily. The novel tells the story of Jack St.Bride,a former teacher and all round "golden boy", who loses his job and reputation when one of his students falsely accuses him of having an affair with her. Moving to Salem Falls, he takes a job washing dishes at the local diner, owned by Addie Peabody, a woman with a painful past of her own. He hopes for anonymity in the picture perfect town. Unfortunately, the one he has moved to is full of people with dark secrets, including 4 teenage girls who believe in Wicca. This is the first of Jodi Picoult's novel's I have read, and I salute her for a great book.
Excellent January 30, 2006 O. Doyle (Ireland) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Salem Falls is the 5th Jodi Picoult book I’ve read after My Sisters Keeper, Plain Truth, Vanishing Acts and The Pact. Anyone who’s read any of her books will tell you that they’re brilliant and Salem Falls is no different. The story centers around the small town of Salem Falls and it’s newest resident, Jack St Bride. Jack appears out of nowhere but it doesn’t take long until word spreads about his murky past. Fear and loathing take hold in this small town and before you know it Jack is fighting to prove his innocence for the second time. The twist at the end had been hinted at so it wasn’t that great a surprise but it doesn’t make the story any less enjoyable. This is another of Joci Picoult’s books that just sucks you in from the very first page. I can always relate to the characters in her books such is her brilliance for making you feel like you know each character personally. I found myself being suspicious of the motives of each and every character right until the very end when the truth prevails…… Jodi Picoult is now at the top of my favourite authors list and I look forward to scooping up another few of her books on Amazon very soon.
A good read January 12, 2006 JL McKinnon-Johnson (Iberia) Another great Jodi Picoult - not the best, but for me nothing can surpass The Pact. Jodi's flair is in reeling you in to the main protaganists lives, and then jumping up with those little surprises and shocks. A good read for a winter's afternoon in front of the fire.
