Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
"Summer is a special time for cooks, a dazzling time when fresh ingredients present themselves in rapid succession, some of them so briefly that we need to snap them up to enjoy them at their best," Delia Smith writes in the introduction to her now classic Summer Collection. No-one can deny that we live in a privileged age when we can shop all round the world for anything at any time of the year, but that should never eclipse the joy of being able to eat something grown close to home when it's at its peak.

Asparagus, runner beans, baby carrots and strawberries all make an appearance in this book, all enhanced by Delia with tastes from California, Italy, Greece and the East. The cooking techniques range from grilling and roasting vegetables to making homemade ice cream. Recipes include Salmon Steaks with Avocado and Crème Fraîche to Sautéed Asparagus with Eggs and Parmesan. Desserts, breads and baking tips complete the collection. --Amanda James

4 out of 5 stars Some lovely photographs   April 9, 2001

we thought this book was an easy to use guide to cooking. Nice photo's of the final results which is a great help to the finished product. Lovely ingrediants which are easy to find in the supermarkets, and not too expensive. A reader from essex.

5 out of 5 stars excellent - one of the best cookery books ever   July 29, 2000

After hunting around for nearly two years, I managed to find a copy of Delia's Summer Collection - in the end, I finished up ordering two copies (one for a friend who had also been on the look-out for the book). I can honestly say that it's one of the best cookery books I have ever owned - especially the section on vegetables. I have tried so many of her recipes and haven't had a failure yet. Carry on cooking, Delia!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent precise refreshing   March 29, 2000

I find that watching your program Delia, which I view on channel 2 public tv(TVO) ontario on Tuesdays, to be excellant precise and very very refreshing. the recipes though they can be as complecated as one wishes for also have a simplicity about them which anyone coming from any country as happens in Canada can readily understand. The program though only (unfortunately)1/2 hour in duration seems so much longer as it is packed with so much imformation. Not only is Delia easy to understand but she shows one clearly how to make the recipe. I would like to add that I sincerely hope that we can enjoy many many more such program. Thank you Jean. P.S. I wish to add that I am aware that this is a book review but I feel the same way about her book the Summer Collection as I do about the Television programs.

4 out of 5 stars Great recipes and illustration. Very English instructions!   March 25, 2000

Great recipes and illustrations. The book is indeed "summery" and fun, reminding me of childhood summers in England. My only complaint is the cumbersome instructions, presented in a such a "pleasing" fashion and very understated, in a truly English way. I will love Delia even more when she starts to use bullet points--I need to be able to find my place quickly when something is boiling over!

5 out of 5 stars Summer food for enthusiasts of travel.   October 4, 1999

When I look through Delia Smiths Summer Collection I think of all the places I want to go but haven't been. I love food especially good food and this book made my taste buds run riot in my mouth. Not only is it easy to follow but there are plenty of recipes that you can adapt to suit your own tastes. A lot of my friends complain saying that the recipes that Delia creates are based around meat and are generally not in keeping with what most people would consider eating. With this cook book I found that not to be true, the Vegetarian Summer get's my vote anyday for sheer creativity and breaking with the normal vegetarian ethos. I would say the only down side is that there aren't enough pictures of the finished product. I always like to compare the finished product to what I have cook. It's always nice to look at something before you cook it, to get an idea of what it should look like. There were also a few ingredients that are nigh on impossible to find in everyday supermarkets. Everything aside I would make this the one cookbook everyone should buy for their kitchen!
