Marian Keyes- always brilliant! May 13, 2008 Bezerus Bezby (Leeds, UK) I am a huge Marian Keyes fan. Her books are always funny, well written and address very important issues. This latest book was no exception. Domestic violence is hardly a cheerful topic, but Keyes hammered home, (pardon the pun), in a funny, although touching way, how easy it is for ordinary women to find themselves on the recieving end of violence from men, that to the rest of the world, may appear charming. Lola was my particular favourate, as she was vulnerable, highly amusing and ultimately a survivor. I simply could not put this book down and as with all of Keye's books, I finished it so quickly I felt sad when I reached the last page. I really don't understand the negative reviews here. I thought this book was wonderful and will definitely read it again!
Best book ever May 13, 2008 Ms. R. Lee (UK) ...........I am giving this 5 stars as I personally thought it was the best book I've ever read, a lot of the reviewers say that they didn't enjoy the way that Lola didn't speak in full sentences, but I have to admit that this was the part I liked best, it reminded me of just a normal person and how they would talk with their friends. I am really disappointed that I have finished the book, but will be looking out for her next one!
A 'HIT' in every sense of the word May 13, 2008 Dixie Chick (Glasgow) Like many of the reviewers listed, I have read all of Marian's books - Kathy Bates character in Misery springs to mind - but I can honestly say that this is the best one yet. This book clearly demonstrates how Keyes has perfected her craft by her clever mix of multi-faceted characters, a gripping storyline and a generous helping of mirth and frivilolity. I found the book quite slow to start with Lola's dated 'Bridget Jones' diary entries and it took a while to warm up to her. However, by the end of the book, I was rooting for all the main female characters to kick tens bells out of the Charming Man. I will now have to join a ten step programme to deal with T. K. W. . . . .The Keyes Withdrawals but look forward to indulging my addiction when her new book is released. No pressure Marian!!
Kinda disappointing, but still Marian (ie. better than lots that's out there) May 12, 2008 Booklover (London, UK) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
Seriously though, this really isn't Marian Keyes' best. Though it contains the usual wit and sparkle, it is wholly flawed by the utterly annoying written voice of main heroine Lola. It is sort of a diary style, where she doesn't speak in full sentences. OK for a bit, but it goes on so long I had to keep putting it down, so bored was I of having to fill in the gaps mentally. That said though, I do love Marian Keyes. Her writing is far superior to many women's fiction writers and - despite the annoyingness of Lola - I loved the other narrators, and was genuinely moved by the ending. Also, I guess because I loved 'Anybody Out There' so much, perhaps I had overly-high expectations for this. Worth a read, if you're already a fan, but if you're new to Marian, I would recommend trying something from the (mostly better) backlist first.

I love Marian Keyes - Rachel's Holiday is one of my all time favourite books, so it is always a bit of an event for me when she has a new book out. As is often the case with Marian Keyes, the story is a slow burner, with lots of hints about how the story is going to progress. This was particularly true of Marnie's sections of the book. Plenty of Marian Keyes' classic humour, alongside a compelling plot make this a very good read. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is that I really disliked the Bridget Jones style of Lola's story. I found it quite irritating and didn't really think it was appropriate for the content of the book. Sorry Marian, other than that I really liked it and look forward to your next one!
