Supernatural Fantastic!! July 21, 2007 Maria Dewart (London, England) If you believe in ghosts or not this is a novel for everyone. I began reading this book thinking it was just another ghost story but it is so not. The characters you meet are as always, in a Jodi Picoult book so enchanting and addictive. I loved Russell and his quest for meeting his girlfriend who died and his numerous failed suicide attempts to meeting Lia whose story really makes the novel come to life. This is definitely my favourite novel of 2007!!
Hmmm January 3, 2007 Nicola Hepworth (Warrington, Cheshire) After reading My Sisters Keeper and Perfect Match I expected a lot from JP books. This one was unfortunately another disppointment. It mixes up ghosts; Native Amercian owned ground; eugenics and the illness which makes you allergic to sunlight. Had it just been about ghosts I could have enjoyed it although the ridiculous detective work to solve a century old murder/suicide had me cringing. Then the whole genetics debate was so one sided I felt like I was being preached at. Had it really argued both sides I could have got into the story as despite what the author suggests in her writing, there are 2 sides to the argument. Not really sure what the Native American thread added to the story and at times it felt as though it was merely in there just so the author could show off her knowledge about the Abaneki tribe. Again not sure what the allergy to sunlight was for except to add some drama at times. I think there were just too many issues thrown in to the pot meaning that none of them were explored in any depth. A real shame as JP is capable of so much more.
A ghost story with a difference August 16, 2005 Mrs. G. Richards (London) 24 out of 30 found this review helpful
A ghost story with a difference - and that difference is that instead of scaring you, it will make you want to cry. Cry for the love lost, the love never found, and the most of all the love that could be. When the words fall off the pages, the coffee makers brew only lemondae and rose petals cover your path you know you are in for a treat. Reminiscent of Alice Hoffman books (Practical Magic etc) this is a gripping tale of love, death and the beautiful mystery that is life.
