Brilliant! November 25, 2008 Ex-dieter This book dispells all the myths about eating. Listen to your body - don't ignore it's signals - it's just Common Sense really!
Fantastic November 20, 2008 C. Humphreys (Cheshire, England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is really a revelation for a non-diet book. It summarises the new way to have a relationship with food that enables you to find your comfortable weight naturally. I didn't plan to follow the rules, just read the book to see what I thought of this new approach. Strangely something got into my subconscious and I lost 2 pounds before I'd even finished reading it, but hadn't realised. Are you furtive about snacking, and think that picking up the odd chocolate bar or a packet of crisps in the garage whilst you fill up with petrol doesn't count? I was!, but now I think before I pick it up - do I really need it, am I actually hungry or bored ? Do you open a packet of something to have just one on the way back from the shop, and then feel so guilty about taking more than one that you have to finish the whole packet and throw away the wrapper so no-one else finds out ! - I did!, but since reading the book I've still opened the packet and eaten 2 or even 3, and if my husband asks why the packet is already open when he unpacks, I just say I ate them - so what? I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to find a healthy relationship with food and stop it becoming an obsession - whether trying to diet or not.
No exaggeration - this book is truly life changing October 28, 2008 Ms. E. J. Sheppard 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
There's a very good reason this book has so many reviews with 5 stars. Quite simply, it will change your life. If you've ever been on a diet, or restricted your eating in any way (even just 'being good'), you MUST read this. I won't go into details of what the book's about, because other reviewers have done that so well, but I'll tell you what the book has done for me. Here's my story: I'm not unusual. I've spent most or my life trying to lose around a stone and a half (I'm 32 now). Some of my earliest memories involve my mother going on various diets, and copying her, even as a young girl (the thought makes me cry now). I've ALWAYS watched what I ate, and was never really relaxed around food. Although I like healthy food, it was always frustrating knowing there were certain things I 'couldn't' have. Going to friends' for dinner, going out, any situation where I couldn't control what I ate, were stressful. I've successfully lost weight three times (all very slowly), the first two putting the weight back on fairly quickly. The third was quite recently, and it took me over a year. I suppose the trigger for me to buy 'Beyond Chocolate' was that I was afraid of putting it back on again, and wanted this time to be different. It NEVER occurred to me that simply trusting myself and eating what I want would work. It's not a new idea to me, and I've heard it before in various guises (e.g. Paul McKenna), but I just thought I couldn't do it. After all, when I've had 'treats' in the house before, I've always binged on them. I just accepted I was the kind of person who couldn't be trusted around certain foods, and I would always have to watch what I ate. But it was reading Sophie and Audrey's book that convinced me to give it a go - and you know what? It works. Since I bought the book almost a week ago, I've eaten what I want. I've eaten slowly, only when hungry, and stopped when satisfied. And I haven't suddenly gained a load of weight either. I'll admit, the approach does scare me a bit. What if I put all the weight back on? But I'll tell you something - the sheer sense of freedom I've felt in the last few days means more to me than any of the weight I've lost. And somehow, I have a feeling the weight won't go back on. I trust my body to tell me what it needs (and incidentally, I've more than halved my food intake!) I can't remember the last time I was this happy. Just writing down 'Ben and Jerry's' on my shopping list fills me with a sense of joy. I no longer have a battle going on in my mind about what I should/must/can't do. And that very ice cream is now sitting in my freezer, unopened. It's ok - I can have it whenever I want! And that's not all - my cupboards are full of chocolate, cereal - all my old 'trigger' foods. And so far I've hardly eaten any (I had one Thornton's chocolate and only ate half - because I was satisfied). I realise this has been a rather long review - but I can't put into words how much reading this book has meant to me. I want to shout it from the rooftops! Honestly - you hace nothing to lose by buying this - but SO much to gain.
Conscious & Free October 25, 2008 CarolCO (France) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Quite simply these are the two things I gained from not only reading the book but also doing the e-course. I have come out of the whole experience with Consciousness and Freedom in my relationship with what I choose to eat. No words will suffice you will just have to discover it for yourself!
Makes so much sense! October 20, 2008 J. Dykes (Glasgow, Scotland) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book has been a revelation for me. I've been a life long yo-yo dieter, I hate dieting and at the start of every new diet I would think, 'I'll just do the diet for a few weeks, lose some weight then magically I'll be able to start eating a sensible, balanced diet and control my portion size!' Obviously this never happened - I'd diet, lose weight, then go back to overeating, gain the weight etc. This book helps to explain why diets don't work and helps you identify why you overeat / use food to deal with emotions etc. It offers practical exercises and tools to help you change your attitude to food for the better. The best way of illustrating this is the fact that I never used to be able to have chocolate in the house as I would pig out on it till I felt sick, then would continue eating it as I wanted to get rid of it (but couldn't possibly just throw it in the bin!) I now have a lovely big jar full of chocolate and lots of chocolate bars in the cupboard to top it up when need be - I've not had to top it up in weeks but can still enjoy a piece of chocolate guilt free whenever I fancy. Buy this book - it might just change your life!
