5 out of 5 stars Night Play   August 13, 2007
Lorna loves 2 read (United Kingdom)
I love Sherrilyn Kenyon`s Dark Hunter series. However Night Play is a favourite due to the story of Bride
(a boutique owner) and Vane (a were-hunter wolf). When you read this book you get a great story that you will want to re read.

2 out of 5 stars A Jerry Springer Guest Romance.   June 6, 2007

I cannot begin to describe the innumerable trailer-type characteristics of the heroine. She has no dignity or self-respect and spends most of the novel in abject subservience to the power of the Were-Hunter wallet. But she does it all through free-will. So that makes her acceptable. Not.

Even the parts of the story not focused on the romance continue the trailer theme with the hero at serious loggerheads with his father. In fact, fathers hating sons is a signature of the Dark-Hunter series.

The whole novel is about dysfunctional relationships and experiences. `No good deed goes unpunished' is a saying that appears in the story. What on earth is that about? How negative and miserable.

However. I am determined to finish reading this book. Despite the fact it's extremely tough going. Why on earth did that stupid woman stay with a partner who treated her like dirt for 5 years? Why is so much of the novel devoted to Bride's petty squabbles with her former partner?

About half-way through the adventure kicks in which makes for a much more interesting read. What I like about the Dark-Hunter world is that it's basically a very sociable world. The guys go to bars, drink, have fantastic tatts, live in each other's houses and all know Ash and Simi. But Bride doesn't get any better. And actually I'd like the DHs a lot more if they weren't all so very very handsome.

It turns out that Bride is actually a daughter of the state's most successful veterinarian. (!!!) And she tries to justify her relationship with her former disrespectful partner like this; "...sometimes we let other people treat us wrongly because we want to be loved and accepted so badly we'd do anything for it." Pardon me? That is the philosophy of criminals, doormats, women who like to victimise themselves and hookers. If you have self-esteem you don't 'do anything' for some idiot's 3 minute love. By the end of the novel Bride is still fat and ugly. Nothing wrong with that. But her self-esteem is still totally dependent on another person; Vane. Get therapy sister.

This novel is not an enjoyable read at all. But I know many readers will disagree. Never mind.

4 out of 5 stars Wow! What a Roller Coaster of a Read!   March 16, 2007

Night Play was my introduction to the Dark Hunter series. I loved it! The way the main characters interact. The way our beautifully masculine 'hero' Vane seems so vulnerable and confused about his feelings for Bride. And the sex! Whoa! Left me breathless. The feelings and emotions leading up to, and after, each scene - namely, a man (well, wolf in this case) taking pleasure in pleasing his lady - are extremely well written. Definitely my kind of read.

We also get introduced to some of the other characters we know will be in other DH novels, which makes us want to read more and connect the dots. And Acheron, the first of the Dark Hunters, features in all of them. Great marketing strategy. It must work as I've read most of them.

What endears me to this particular book is the fact that our heroine, Bride is a 'normal' woman. She's a size 18 (14/16 UK?)and curvy. She has a total lack of confidence in her appearance, especially as Taylor, her ex-boyfriend is so condescending of her. So she doesn't understand why this beautifully 'masculine man' (she thinks that a lot) finds her not only attractive, but beautiful. He doesn't understand her self deprecation as he adores her just as she is. He re-introduces her to her femininity in a really loving way. And I love the way he 'deals' with her ex...

Yes, I know it's a little bit cheesy, and there's a lot of our hero saying: "I'd rather cut my arm off/die than see you hurt" stuff, but the DH series are pure, unadulterated fantasy after all, and the ecapism is great, so Dammit! Why shouldn't the good guy fall in love with a good girl, make hot love to the good girl, vanquish the bad guys, make love to the good girl some more and dance the Macarena with a demon and a load of other Were-animals in a club? Bring it on!!!

I must confess that this book wasn't exactly what I was expecting. I thought I was in for a vampire / werewolf yarn along the lines of a Buffy novel. It's actually much more of a love story that happens to have creatures of the night in it. I found that a little off putting to start with because the fact that some of the main characters weren't entirely human seemed to be a bit of an irrelevance. However I stuck with it and the second half of the book really picked up. If you like your passion, lust and romance then this will do you fine. If you're after non stop action then it's just okay.

When I found the dark hunter books written by Sherrilyn Kenyon I knew that I had hit the jackpot. Night Play is an offshoot of those books. The main charactor is a werewolf who is magic. Both literally and personally. His personalty builds up as the book progresses and the story moves along at a steady pace. His luck at finding a mate, his love for her, is a beautiful story to read. But his need for her well being, and his self doubt of his worthyness make you wish that our male partners could care as much for us. The sizzeling love scenes are hot, graphic, and filled with just that, love.
I have found that all charactors in Sherrilyn Kenyon books are alive and give a great sense of depth. If you like not just romance and hot sex but a story with real people with real problems then this is a book for you.
