4 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it but...   May 13, 2008

I agree with a few of the other reviews; I did enjoy this book, but it didn't blow me away and leave a lasting impression. The language was beautifully descriptive and atmospheric, but I felt that the ending was a bit of an anticlimax and left a lot of questions unanswered.

A fascinating, engrossing story which is extremely well written. This is a very good book indeed. I am not normally a reader of crime fiction but then this is not an example of normal crime fiction. A gruelling and deeply sad tale, brilliantly and evocatively told. A story that will stay with me for a long time. It's hard to believe that such an authentically American story is told by a British writer - but so what? Ellory is to be admired for his cross cultural dexterity.

I bought this book because it had good reviews on here, and it bumped my order up to 15. I can honestly say this is probably the best book I have read in months (as a commuter I get through at least two a week). So atmospheric, an absolute joy. It has even led to me writing a review, which is a first!

I recently read A Quiet Belief in Angels for my book group and was blown away by the story, the characters and the delicious writing. When I wasn't reading the book, I was itching to get back to it. I love how the narrative echoes the pace of life in sleepy Augusta Falls, Georgia where much of the story is set; it's so atmospheric, I really felt I was there. It is reminiscent of To Kill a Mockingbird and The Catcher in the Rye, two of my all-time favourite novels. This is the first of R. J. Ellory's works I've read and I savoured every word - I could read his writing all day long. I'll definitely be reading his other novels and eagerly await his next, A Simple Act of Violence.

What a wonderful book! At times I was crying my eyes out, other times I was overjoyed, or shocked and was always completely caught up in the story. Once I'd worked out who had "done it", about 4 pages from the end, I didn't want to read any more such was my involvement with the storyline. Beautifully written and completely involving.
Absolutley wonderful.
