A bit uneven but not bad August 4, 2008 Rafal Gruszczynski (Warsaw Poland) Indeed a lot of action and locations. More than Bond himself. Written in a very "practical way" - good for travelling as chapters are usually short 4-5 pages (430 pages and 90+ chapters). Well researched in the historic, geographic and military areas. The weak points are the political background (far worse than Flynn for example). Some of the dialogues as well could be shorter or more natural. The plot - some shortcuts or inconsistencies, but in general not bad. It says SEAL, etc. but there is not too much military stuff in it - more investigations and other stories than any special forces etc. I enjoyed it. To the point taht when I come accross another Brad Thor, I guess I'll give it a try.
As good as ever November 4, 2006 Wendy Jones (Southampton, England) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I bought the paperback version of this book on a recent visit to the states, and I am extremely glad I did. From beginning to end the plot is well scripted and you never know what is going to happen next. At every stage I wanted to keep reading and could not put it down. Although Scot Harvarth finds himself in trouble in this book, he somehow manages to keep himself on top. I wont ruin the ending but I have to say it took me by surprise. I would recommend this book to anyone, whether you have read Brar Thor before or otherwise. I am a fan of Brad Thor and this book has confirmed to me once more, the reasons for this.
Avoid ... April 11, 2006 Cynical Yorkshireman (London, England) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
It appears that Brad Thor's books get worse as he writes more of them ... This one is very, very 'special' - badly written, full of plot holes and bad characterisations. And don't even get me started on the science ... I have to say that it has been a long, long time since I gave up on a book before finishing it. This, however, had ended up on the 'burn' pile before I got halfway through.Don't waste you money (or time) on this.
Great Start to a Chilling Tale July 6, 2005 D. Newstead (Middlesex UK) 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Well after the incredible Lions of Lucerne I always look forward to reading a Brad Thor novel, Path of The Assassin started well and went a bit off the rails as did State of The Union, his trade mark now seems to be wonderful opening chapters but then gets bogged down too much in politics rather than action which hinders this book too much and is rather like some movies where the film builds from a great beginning takes too long with side line stories and then has a rush ending. Still Scott Harvarth is still a great character and Lions of Lucerne in my top 10.
