Can You Dig It? September 2, 2008 EPW Thompson (London) This is a little gem. It'll put a smile on your face and you might even learn a thing or two from the self deprecating confessions of a man who wants to do right by himself and his family. It mostly reminds me of A Year In Provence. in a good way. remember when we all thought that was a charming and uplifting tale of someone like us voluntarily entering an alluring but alien subculture and triumphing over the obstacles, both real and imagined, to be accepted as an insider. here valentine low confronts his mid life crisis by taking an allotment and in the process of digging for victory (or at least a personal best) learns to reap that which he has sown. Like Mayle, he paints a vivid and enticing landscape of an Other World: where the adman rails against recalcitrant plumbers, the journalist Low reports from The War on Bindweed and worries whether he is being patronised by the svengali-like Michael from the adjoining plot. It is sharply written, very funny and draws us in to the metaphor so successfully that we can feel the Zen rhythms of winter digging and Summer hoeing even as he moves us through a rather beautifully crafted narrative arc of soul searching and enlightenment. A rite of passage for middle-aged males and all those who seek to understand them. I'm sending one to the two Jeremys, Paxman and Clarkson. Cheaper than a Ferrari and more fulfilling than serial philandering.
allotments May 27, 2008 Mr. E. C. Low (United Kingdom) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
considering that valentine low is my uncle this book is full to the broom with amusing facts, interesting stories and plenty of courage for those gardeners out there. Like myself i am growing an allotment, because of this book it has given me the courage to dig, plant and grow many vegetables. So any gardeners out there who may want to start digging, bring this book with you to your allotment!
Well dug May 19, 2008 meerkat (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've just taken on an allotment and chanced across this book...and I devoured it in one sitting. It's a wise and witty account of the author's cultivation of his London allotment, together with a light sprinkling of the history of allotments. Highly recommended - and the book is now doing the rounds on my allotment site.
