a warm reminder of hard times July 16, 1999 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Like the picture on the cover, this is a deceptively gentle book. A long discussion with Armistead Maupin, that moves backwards and forwards in time as conversations do, the informality of the book blurs the harsh outlines of being gay through the 60s and 70s and the struggle to come out. Underneath that cuddly exterior, Maupin is as tough as his old-style upright father. He is unrelenting in the pursuit of honesty, of being upfront about being gay, of opening the closet door and giving homosexual relationships some air to grow.We take much for granted now about gay life - this book lightly reminds us that much ground was painfully broken in the recent past, and much remains to be done. Gale and Maupin are two romantics, hard as candy, warm as toast, with a sharp steady eye on the world around them.
