Product Description This fabulous product by Jamie Oliver is aptly named the 'flavour shaker'. Comprising of three components, this handy gadget is ideal for making salad dressings, sauces and marinades. The shaker features a handy non-slip grip and a ceramic ball inside that crushes and grinds the ingredients as it is shaken. Made from toughened plastic, the flavour shaker is going to be this Christmas number 1 gadget.

Good idea, Great looking, but very poor quality April 21, 2008 Number 31 I received one of these for Christmas and found that whilst it crushed the smaller items such as peppercorns very well, it was hopeless at things like garlic cloves (somewhat different to when Jamie uses it on tv!). It will squash a garlic clove a bit, but not like on the TV where they appear as if you had chopped them very finely by hand. Solution? Chop them very finely by hand with a good knife!! The biggest problem with this however, was the locking mechanism which broke after only two weeks of use. Noticeable by the bits of plastic in the mixture I had prepared I was amazed to find the little locking tabs breaking off so easily. In addition it had only been used half a dozen times before this and only hand washed (though it does say upper rack dishwasher safe in the instructions). All in all a big disappointment, and having contemplated replacing it until reading these other reviews, I would suggest anyone else gives it a wide berth until they redesign it with stronger parts.
Good and Bad March 22, 2008 M. G. Chisholm (UK) First off this is not a revolutionaly tool of radical improvement on what has been used before. It's basically a pestle and mortar but using a ceramic ball and a closed cup. Nice idea and within limits works well. Thing you must ask yourself before you buy is how many times in your life have you used a pestle? Probably not many - which is probably how much you would use this device. Having said that if you like to make your own curry spice mixes then its pretty good - as long as you don't intend using it for liquid at all. It leaks like a sieve. Seems reasonably made but I suspect that the ball would eventually damage the inside, expecially if one is vigorous with the shaking. If it was better made and if you did crush a lot of spice etc. then this would be very good. However if you only do the occasional bit of crushing then it's a bit of a waste, expecially given that it's not liquid tight or particularly well made.
Short life span March 19, 2008 M. Middleton (Scotland) Brilliant idea! worked well for a while!BUT after a fair bit of use in my kitchen it cracked!! YES its a lovely addition but it should last longer than 6 months under normal household usage, Shouldnt it? My son is now on his second and thought he just was unlucky with the first, but it would seem they ALL go the same way!
Leaks like a sieve February 28, 2008 Clare Jaques (UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I love the idea of this Flavour Shaker and I have to say it is great for crushing peppercorns, garlic, salt and herbs, as part of making dressings. My problem is I have to wrap it in a tea towel whenever I use it because, no matter how tight or gently I do it up, it leaks oil and vinegar everywhere. I don't mind having to shake it hard, but I have bashed myself in the face a few times when I stopped concentrating! If it didn't leak, I'd give 5 stars, but quite frankly, I'd rather use a jam jar and crush stuff with my pestle & mortar. Sorry Jamie...
maybe i should be a rocket scientist ?? February 19, 2008 Mr. D. C. Thomson (benfleet , essex, uk) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
nearly didnt buy one of these because of all the negative reviews but im certainly glad i did. it amazes me what rubbish people can write. 1) yes you certainly have to shake vigourously to crush things but you dont have to be a weightlifter. 1 clove of garlic in 20 shakes. 2) as above it does crush garlic ! ive also done dried chillis , basil , oregano , shallots. the one failure so far was some almonds probably could have done them if id had the time but i was better off putting them in a bag and bashing them. 3)as for aligning the arrows , give me a break , yes you can lock it together in several ways but if you just make sure that the black grip all lines up , as on the picture then its always going to be in the right position. you dont need to overtighten it either as i suspect most have done theres a gentle click when the arrows line up. not sure about the plastic cracking , used mine 20 times + and theres no sign of any. only time it leaks is when i open it up ! thats the one annoying bit if you have added oil and perhaps want to taste it then add some more ingredients , you do end up getting oil all over your hands and the shaker. maybe the people who have written bad reviews were expecting it to dice things or crush within 1 or 2 shakes ? no idea , maybe the designs been improved ? but im certainly happy with mine
