Thanks Jamie! October 8, 2008 Loopster (Cheltenham, UK) 8 out of 12 found this review helpful
Just bought the book today for a bargain tenner, and as it's a cold day chose the stew recipe (hotpot version). I bought the ingredients in my lunch hour and have cooked it tonight. Simple as that. The recipe was really clear to follow, and the results were absolutely delicious. Plus my kitchen smells like a proper kitchen for the first time in a long time! I should add that I'd never made a hotpot before in my life - my culinary repertoire is lamentably limited to about 10-12 dishes that I seem to constantly rotate, which of course gets boring, which is when you reach for a ready meal (M&S or not, it's still full of rubbish). After a successful first attempt at one of the recipes, it seems a great book to just dive in to and get fresh inspiration. Thoroughly recommended!
An excellent book October 8, 2008 C. A. Davies (England) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is an excellent book and provides great ideas for the experienced and well as no so experienced cook. Those of the "won't do it unless it's free" brigade should understand that people don't attach any value to things that are free. To ensure the book has value (and is subsequently used) cash needs to be forked out to purchase it. Anyway, no-one pays the recommended retail price for a book nowadays and even the traditional high street stores are discounting now. All that needs to be done is to give up a couple of packets of fags or one takeaway and this book is easily affordable. Jamie, you're doing a great job. Well done.
A Cook-Book for Today October 8, 2008 C. Newham (South Coast, UK) 12 out of 19 found this review helpful
The best thing about Jamie's new book is that it gives you a huge repertoir of every-day healthy food that you can enjoy on a budget. It includes a large number of recipes around a theme - Mince for instance. How many of us depend on good old mince in these times? More than that though, if you are used to enjoying Chinese and Indian Takeaways Jamie has provided a full menu of these too -- all your favourites are in there & you can make them yourself! There how many cook-books teach you how to put together salads and breakfasts that are quick, simple and healthy? Spread the word... cooking is for everyone. I can't wait to try every recipe as it all looks so easy and good to eat. I tried the Fish Pie first -- that was really good because I don't usually like fish, but I loved this. I recomend that if you live alone you just make a whole batch (for 4 or 6) and freeze the remaining portions -- better and cheaper than takeaways.
I know how to cook but this has really given me a dose of confidence that i really needed October 7, 2008 L. V. Macmillan (Glasgow, Scotland UK) 8 out of 16 found this review helpful
I bought this book as a result of watching the second episode of Jamie's Ministry of Food. The food that i have tried from it so far are, the Meatballs and Pasta, Fish Pie (i tried these first thanks to the videos on the Amazon website)and the Basic Stew with Chicken and White Wine. My food has rarely had such delicious flavours and tastes before. It has shown up my food in the past, though 99% homemade, as missing something or other extra. I have been handed recipes from my mother and i love collecting recipes and trying them out with variable results, but these 3 dishes were rounded with flavour and very moreish. My repertoire and confidence have grown enormously just as a result of making them in the past week. Rather than often resenting cooking for my boyfriend i think i am going to start enjoying it more and more. No guarenteeing it yet, but i think it may just happen. Jamie, you are a complete star. Many many thanks. I have now bought two more copies as Christmas presents.
25 RRP? October 7, 2008 Neil (England) 12 out of 39 found this review helpful
Jamie's about the democracy of cooking. Part 1 of his Rotherham TV show focused on some socially deprived people who have previously had neither the money, skills or guidance to cook properly. Undoubtably he should be applauded for the efforts he has put in both here, via School Dinners and the 15 restaurants. However, 25 rrp - if a man of his wealth wants to reach the masses why not find an innovative way of getting this book to people cheaper, Radiohead, Prince etc all give away new music Jamie should lead the way with this book. I appreciate many retailers will heavily discount however I doubt the young mother on benefits featured in his first programme would fork out 10 let alone 25 for this.
