Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars A misrepresentation.   April 1, 2008

This is a history of the NATION of England - not the history of the ISLAND of Britain. Be aware of this before you purchase this wrongly named book. That is the reason I gave this book 1/5. The content of the book is actually acceptable.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful read   September 24, 2004

This is an excellent book. It offers the reader fascinating insights into the more worthwhile aspects of British history, giving both a general overview and some in-depth analysis. From a non-historian's point of view, I would say it seems fairly objective in its presentation and does not oblige the reader to start the work and pursue it in chronological fashion. Rather, he/she can 'dip in' to his/her favourite aspects of history, focusing on whichever aspect takes their fancy. This book is also suitable for older children (I began reading it when I was 15) as the style is elevated without being abstruse. Excellent read, highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars For Britain please read England   October 16, 2000

A very good book about the history of England, but Scotland and Wales get VERY little acknowledgement. At the same time I bought a history on Wales and funilly enough someting actually happend there BEFORE 1536 - which is where Wales gets it's first mention - 'absorbed into England'

5 out of 5 stars Easy reading, comprehensive and enjoyable.   March 16, 2000

In buying "The Story of Britain", I wanted for a tome that would cover the history of Britain without being too impenetrable. The book does this well, and does so whilst keeping every single chapter and its corresponding period of history interesting, engrossing and enjoyable to read. Roy has a great skill for describing episodes of history in much more lifelike way than I have found in many books. Probably not the level of detail for the major historian, but plenty for the casual interested reader.
