Excellent detail although somewhat clinical August 18, 2008 Stephen B. Peddie (Surrey, UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
An excellent book with a long preamble to the sea battle itself providing a thorough understanding of the strategic context. The actual fighting is described in considerable detail with close attention to the time line (there are a number of situational maps showing the disposition of ships throughout the afternoon). Curiously, the description of the unfolding battle is somewhat clinical and the sense of discomfort the suffering of the participants should engender, absent. Although the book is flawed, my interest was sufficiently aroused to immediately purchase Nelson and Napoleon by Christopher Lee. This book covers almost exactly the same ground although with more devotion to the period and events leading up to the battle and less emphasis on the battle itself. Curiously, again, although a less detailed account, the description of the battle was considerably more evocative. That might be important as it is the ability of the writer to make old history feel alive and relevant that takes us beyond the names and dates of dry school lessons and into the territory of real understanding. Overall: definitely worth reading, but be careful, I didn't pay anything like the price currently quoted by Amazon.
A most enjoyable and diligently written account.... November 10, 2004 Mr Daniel Morton (Whitechapel, London) 38 out of 41 found this review helpful
Clayton and Craig really bring the battle of Trafalgar to life. Written in the third person, the book is a fascinating account of the life and times of those serving in the British Navy. The book is full of factual and personal annecdotes of the battle and I found it easy to translate this into my own imagination of what both sides were going through. I was particularly impressed with their completely unbiased interpretation, although at times I would have liked a referal section to decipher some of the Naval terminology.Overall I would thoroughly recommend this book...Well done!
