I used this course to support an evening class and othr self-study courses. I used it mainly for tape listening whilst travelling. I found it very useful (though the American instructions become wearisome after repeated listening). The phrase book looks very useful - though the absence of pinyin may be a pity. It represents very, very good value - when used in tandem with other courses. Text with oodles of characters + generous tape...

Berlitz Mandarin Chinese
This is a phrase book and one accompanying cassette. This could have been a winner, the layout is attractive, the subjects are well chosen, but still it is not the phrase book I would recommend as a first choice. The reason is that Pinyin, the standard system of romanization of Chinese signs, have entirely been omitted. Instead the book contains Chinese signs and a simplified phonetic transciption. If you are familiar with the Chinese signs, you will not need a phrasebook. The phonetic transcription is useless if you want to look up a word in a dictionary, and it is superfluous when accompanied with a cassette. The Rough Guide and Lonely Planet Mandarin Phrasebooks are better options.
