IF YOU FORMED A NEGATIVE OPINION OF PAUL BURRELL May 13, 2008 Leeds lass (England) 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
YOU WERE BANG ON RIGHT. IMO HE IS A SNEAK AND A LIAR AND THIS BOOK PROVES IT - AND IT IS WORTH 5 STARS SO EVERYONE CAN READ THIS BOOK AND `WATCH` HIM SHOOT HIMSELF IN THE FOOT. TAKING DIANA`S PERSONAL DISCARDED LETTERS OUT OF THE WASTE PAPER BASKET AND TAKING THEM HOME AND KEEPING THEM `SO THEY WOULDN`T FALL INTO THE WRONG HANDS`... SHAME ON YOU BURRELL - YOU HAVE GOT MORE FACES THAN THE TOWN HALL CLOCK !!
A great book, a decent man, and a royal history January 20, 2008 Flickster Burns (Shipley, W Yorks) I started reading A Royal Duty after Christmas against the backdrop of the on-going Diana inquest, and the juxtaposition was very deliberate. It took four years for a friend to buy me this Paul Burrell book, so unsure was I of him & his motives. Having read it, his motives are clear: he wanted us to remember Diana as she was, and this warm tribute almost allows us to meet her in person, so vivid are his accounts & recall. It is the best book on her I have read to date. I doubt it will be surpassed. In the past few days, I've been able to reflect on his account in the light of his much-criticised testimony to the Diana inquest. None of his apparent contradictions can dilute what a compelling book A Royal Duty is, and nor does it diminish the one inescapable fact: that he was there, and this is the woman he knew. We can split hairs and doubt this and doubt that but I believe this to be the most accurate record of life with Diana. Well done Paul, and don't let your enemies grind you down.
If you want to know Diana... January 5, 2008 A. H. Robinson (Brighton, UK) There has been an awfully large amount of nasty vitriol poured on Paul Burrell's name in recent years. In one way, it's hard to understand, but in another it's oh so easy... I would invite anyone to tell themselves that Paul Burrell *has done* what the media claim and sold out or betrayed Diana. And then read this book. And then realise that he has painted a loving, warm tribute to a remarkable woman. Sure, others who knew Diana can be pedantic about the odd point here and there, but beyond petty and pointless spats, what shines through is Diana's warmth, her kindness, her sense of humour, and an enlightening discourse in the way Diana thought about issues and why. By the time you finish reading this book, your love for Diana is refreshed and your view on Burrell is a positive one - that of a loyal butler and friend who has done nothing worse than paint a gloriously loving tribute to the most loved woman of the twentieth century. Good on you, Paul.
A most fascinating insight into British royalty December 25, 2007 Jack Oliver (Kent, England) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Although I didn't expect to (after reading some of the media slurs), I found this book to be written with a fine touch - spellbinding and intriguing. It must be as good as any portrait of the Windsors in print. I also recommend the Audio book, narrated most effectively by Burrell himself, with exquisite renditions of the Royals' voices!
Hard to get into October 26, 2007 R. Armstrong (Surrey) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I found this book hard to get into which is a real shame because i was really looking forward to it. I found myself getting bored and not taking the words in. Please give it a try though because there are some very interesting parts about a wonderful woman. A woman who is truly missed.
