Agatha Raisin Investigates June 10, 2008 Judy Jenkins (England) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I thoroughly enjoyed these CDs. I've been a fan of Penelope Keith for many years, and think this role - as a kind of latter day Miss Marple - is the best thing she's ever done. She plays a high-powered businesswoman who moves to the countryside and finds she doesn't really fit in, so she has to cheat to get noticed. In the first story, she enters a local baking competition with a shop-bought quiche...only to discover she's poisoned the judge. And in the second, all the villagers have fallen in love with the handsome local vet...who again gets mysteriously murdered. These are very light-hearted murder mysteries: think 'Midsomer Murders' on radio, but the character of Agatha Raisin is such a glorious creation: she's feisty, ballsy, chain-smoking, totally un-PC, and yet somehow incredibly likeable. I was very sad when I got to the end of these, and intend to treat myself to the next lot!
why mess with it? May 30, 2008 R. Storer (blackpool. england) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
i think these adaptations are terrible and that penelope keith is totally mis cast. changing the names of people and the cats seems an odd idea. if you have read the books first ,you may find these adaptations leave you lacking.sorry.
The first two books on audio CD February 2, 2008 Ashes (UK) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Like the first reviewer I discovered this audio Cd quite by chance and treated myself to it as an Xmas gift. i think what makes theses first two stories so appealing to the listener is the full cast recording. The variety of voices adds to the narration and you find yourself drawn into a story which inevatably will lead comparissions to a modern day Miss Marple. Of the two books here, for me the first, Quiche of Death is the best. It's a great scene setter and introduces you nicely to all the principal characters. The second disc I didn't enjoy as much possibly because it's a darker story so it lacks the humour of the first book but that shouldn't necessarily detract you from enjoying it as well. Books three and four have now also been released on a double CD, using the same cast.
Entertainment plus! January 6, 2008 B. Maher (UK) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Agatha Raisin stories are great. We only discovered them after receiving the CDs as a Christmas gift. Hopefully there will be plenty more to come. The stories are very entertaining, and funny too. Penelope Keith plays the part brilliantly. If you are looking for something really different, then look no further than the adventures of Agatha.
