I wish he had written more.... July 18, 2004 MR A S HUXLEY (Reading, Berkshire United Kingdom) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
M.R.JAMES. Woo....If you are English forget all the other "horror" writers, bin them, this hits the spot. Not only the best horror writer I have ever read, but also the best short story writer (BEST BOOK I READ IN 2003). Boy... can he tell a story in 15-25 pages. The wonderful thing about the tales is their attention to detail. Nothing is out of place. The start (hints) middle (hints) and end (shock!). Great!, at the price they are buy 10 and give them away at Christmas. P.S. these tales are really scary ... not for the under 13.... WONDERFUL I WISH THERE WAS MORE!!! P.S. some Latin will help
The definitive ghost story collection. September 9, 2003 S. Hapgood 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
These are an absolute must for anyone who likes spooky tales. They have with-stood the test of time. Quite what it is about them I'm not sure, other than that perhaps M R James really knew how to impart an Atmosphere. My own favourites are "The Stalls of Barchester" and "The Ash Tree" (although like so many of James's stories, not perhaps the best reading for an arachnophobe!). One of the most atmospheric though is "The Mezzotint", about a haunted picture, which each time you look at it unfolds a terrible crime committed many years before. A good horror tale should linger in your mind after you've read it, and so many of these do.

What can I say? Possibly the greatest writer of his genre. So modern yet written long ago. A definitive collection of work.

If you love 19th century tales that chill the spine, then this is one book you must simply read. From "The stalls of Barchester cathederal" to the mysterious "No13" you will be transported back into another time, so well described & with characters so intriging you'll wish you were there....or will you? MR james really is the master storyteller, so pull up a chair next to the fire, turn out the lights & TV, light up a candle & enjoy. The dark Autumn & Winters nights will disappear.
