Cotton candy July 16, 2008 Mr. I. S. Clements (U.K) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Like a handful of other reviewers here, I'm puzzled at folk proclaiming this the best Koontz they've ever read. It completely lacks the edgy intelligence and pacing of his best works like Phantoms, Cold Fire, or Fear Nothing. Lightning is so cloying and saccharine in its constant declarations of the wonder of people and life that it becomes like eating a constant course of desert, great for a little while but pretty soon you'll want some meat. The main character lacks any faults, making her feel like a characature rather than a real person, which as someone else mentioned is a recurring problem in Koontz's work. The main storyline just pointed out to me that the author must really have enjoyed Terminator, out a few years before, as it feels very similar with themes of a saviour moving through time - albeit this version has a 'twist' which feels right out of a B-Movie. I am being harsh with this review but only because I think Lightning is Koontz at his self-indulgent worst, and to encourage it could stifle his very real strengths.
A Brilliant Book April 13, 2008 Christopher "TheDonMega" Wood (Whitworth, Lancashire, England) I love this book, wasn't sure what to expect when I picked it up off my dads bookshelf, but was I glad I did!! I was instantly hooked and could not put it down. It possibly spoiled my holiday because I wouldn't put it down long enough to go out and do holiday stuff, had to be practically dragged away. Luckily I only started reading it halfway through the holiday. In fact, just writing this review now is making me want to drop the book I'm reading(James Bond-Live And Let Die) and start reading it again. Buy it, read it, love it!!
Just perfect - excellent edge of your seat thrill ride! January 6, 2008 Mary Chrapliwy This is the first Dean Koontz book I've ever read. I avoided his books in the past because I thought they were purely horror. Then a friend advised me to read this one. What a great book! The main character in this book is Laura. When this book opens we are at the moment of her birth -- a handsome stranger appears and stops a drunk doctor from going to the hospital to assist in her delivery. He is very polite and kind to the drunk doctor as he ties him to a chair and calls the hospital to let them know he won't be going there to deliver her. As a result she is delivered by other doctors, mother dies in childbirth, and a sweet wonderful father is the only remaining family she has. Through her life a few major incidents occur where this kind stranger appears and saves her from danger. Who is this man who arrives in a flash of lightening? Laura begins to think of him as her guardian angel. Throughout this well written tale we see Laura wed and have a wonderful little boy. The guardian angel appears sporatically in her lifetime. As an adult she begins to wonder just where he comes from. I won't tell you more as it would spoil the rest of the plot. The book had lots of twists and turns, an enormous amount of suspense, a love story, and an element of science fiction/fantasy that'll keep you glued to your seat. Once you start reading you won't want to stop. This is a great story no one should miss. After you finish reading it you'll find yourself saying to your friends as I have: "you've GOT to read this book!"
My 100-word book review June 14, 2007 A. J. Cull (London, UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Dean Koontz takes one of his trademark images, the ominous flash of lightning, and turns it into a chillingly imaginative plot device in a novel that has science fiction elements but is emphatically a thriller, and an excellent one at that. Lightning was one of the first Koontz stories I ever read, and remains one of my favourites. It turned me into a fan! With plenty of action, lashings of atmosphere and a great heroine who battles against both external enemies and the fears of her past, this novel is absolutely one of the author's best ever. Most definitely recommended.
