One of her best..... October 17, 2006 Kathleen Kelley (Weeki Wachee, FL United States) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is one of the author's best. I read her Regency romances when I was in high school and now am re reading them. (I am 51) They are as charming and well written today as they were when first published. I highly recommend all except an Infamous Army. That was the only one where the romance didn't make any sense.

This is classic Georgette Heyer, gentle and terribly well mannered with a typically spirited heroine. John is a worthy suiter and the eventual outcome is pretty obvious from the start. However the many twists in the plot and the immaculate attention to period speech and costume are as wonderful as ever. I've read over forty of her fifty or more published works and this would creep in at about number 10. Try it, then try The Grand Sophy, in my opinion the incomparable Heyer at her finest.
My favourite Georgette Heyer so far. August 1, 2001 7 out of 11 found this review helpful
This was the second Georgette Heyer I read, having been given an old copy by my Aunt. Being very tall myself I identified with the heroine Nell and fell in love with John. Their romance and the background mystery made the whole book a delight.
a great quiet georgette heyer March 24, 2001 6 out of 10 found this review helpful
I've always liked and often loved Georgette Heyer's books. They have main characters with a full personalities and the dialogue speaks for itself. I'm buying this one again as my other copy is an old tattered second-hand one.
