Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Easy read   May 3, 2007
Hayles (England)
This was my first Binchy novel and although it didn't blow me away it was certainly an easy, gentle read. The plot was a bit contrived and circular but you don't always need a clever story to make a book enjoyable. The writing is rich and the whole experience was like watching one of those ITV Sunday night tea-time dramas set in the 70s. Light and enjoyable but not about to change your life

3 out of 5 stars Good   December 8, 2006

I quite enjoyed this book, although I don't think it is the best Binchy book about. Its a nice story and I like the way it is written as if its several short stories. Would recomend for lighter reading for sure.

again this wonderful author captivated my imagination with the wonderful tales of romance in irland. I love her writeing, there are sad moments and happy moments. If you liked circle of friends and tara rd, then you will love this. PLEASE READ IT, you wont be able to put it down.

2 out of 5 stars Bland and boring - disappointing after Binchy's other books   June 23, 2000

After reading others of Maeve Binchy's books, this was disappointing and repetitive. It brings lovely images of Ireland, but is disjointed and fragmented, with the same expressions ("...her hand went to her throat...") as in her other books. Light easy reading though - if that's what you're after.

4 out of 5 stars The Copper Beech, a story about the people of Shancarrig.   March 2, 2000
4 out of 5 found this review helpful

The Copper Beech by Maeve Binchy is a story about the lives of people who live in a small Irish village called Shancarrig. It's not one story, but the story of a group of towns folk and how their lives intertwine, their living, their loves and losses. The Copper Beech, the large tree that stands in front of the school house, records the lives of these characters as they carve their initials and dreams into its bark. This is the second time I have read THe Copper Beech and I think I enjoyed it even more the second time through. Maeve Binchy shows the strengths and weaknesses of each character, some you can feel close to, some seem untouchable, but they all make up the town of Shancarrig. If you have ever lived in a small town where there really are no secrets (every one knows you business) and yet, there are secrets in everyone's life, you will cetainly enjoy this book.
