s ashley July 7, 2008 bird (u.k) i agree with r taylor it seemed it was a rush to finish but still it was a good read and i will read again as i do with all elizabeth elgins books its a shame that there will not be any more
Wonderfull Read December 11, 2007 C. J. Pike (West Sussex, England) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I agree with Book Worm this book is excellent, in true Elgin style. The other readers are may be too critical looking for the change-over point of auther's. No-one could finish the book as Elizabeth could have done, but thank goodness someone tried. Otherwise we would be one down on our book shelves, it's bad enough knowing there will be no more. Read it with an open mind and you will enjoy it.
Another wonderful book October 3, 2007 Ms. S. J. Taylor (Ipswich) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
What Elizabeth Elgin does best is capture the real spirit of wartime so those of us who haven't lived in it are transported back in time to wartime Britian. I love the stories of the tree girls Nan, Carrie and Evie who find freindship when they all join up and end up at Heronflete together, each providing support during hard times and enjoying the good. I was, as everyone sad to hear my favourite author will not be writing again, best wishes and thoughts to her family. Well done also to Elizabeths family for finishing her lovely work, the ending was just right and reminded me of the first book I read "All The Sweet Promises".
Fab! Fab! Fab! April 25, 2007 R. Taylor (Worcestershire UK) 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I love Elizabeth Elgin's books and I was really sad to hear that she passed away in 2005 without being able to finish her most recent book. And selfishly I was sad that one of my favourite authors wouldn't bring out another book ever again. The book was lovely and I wasn't disappointed at all, it was true Elgin style, well written with a romantic, engaging plot. I didn't want it to end! Like in the other reviews here, it was quite obvious that someone had stepped in to write the ending for her. There was a bit of repetition and it did seem as though there was a rush to finish it without tying up all the loose ends eg. Carrie being united with Todd, Evie getting to see Bob again and nan settling down to life at the Manor. They could have really gone to town with the finale of this book but sadly it seemed as though whoever wrote the ending couldn't wait to get it finished. Oh well! it didn't do any harm
the book was not worthy of Elizabeth Elgin March 29, 2007 J. Bolvig-Hansen (United Kingdom) 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
the three ATS who get thrown together in a secret statley home during the war, proves to change all there lives. Nan who falls for an airman who flies long dangerous missions lives her life on the fact he may not return to marry her. Carrie's story I found drawn out and rather labourious, Evie the steading hand. If you read the forward in this book you will see that the end may have been written by a ghost writer. Not worthy of Elizabeth Elgins wonderful former books. Thin plot and not much substance. Bit disappointing.
