Fascinating and moving look at the airmen of WWII October 9, 2001

Laddie Lucas has compiled stories and mini-biographies of some of the outstanding characters of the 1939-45 air war. Faced with the horror of the fighting it is sobering that these men (American, Polish, British, Australian, Kiwis, Germans) were often younger than myself (25) and had the responsibilities of leading squadrons, commanding crews etc. I can't imagine what it must have been like but Mr Lucas brings home the fact that these were just ordinary men who ended up doing extraordinary things under extreme conditions. If you want real life heroes, go no further than the characters in this book. I believe this was one of the last books by Laddie Lucas. He has left us with a fine legacy, as have his subjects.
