The Vows of Silence September 5, 2008 Patricia M. Straughan 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a novel about a detective rather than about detection. Enjoyable but more crime and plotting next time please.

I'm really sorry but I cannot agree with these sparkling reviews of Susan Hill's "Vows of Silence" I found the continual trials and tribulations of Simon's family extremely irritating, - they really did go on and on - ex-girlfiend and all! It was pretty easy to guess the guilty party quite early on, and the so-called "Red Herrings" were so obvious they were more like "Great White Whales" I have not read any of these Simon Serrailler stories before, but none of the support characters struck me as being very interesting, - or necessary - and there were far too many of them. And a bit of humour here and there would not have been out of place amidst all that gloom and doom. Doesn't anyone in Lafferton ever have a laugh? I read this book fresh from reading R.D. Wingfields "A Killing Frost" Sorry folks -just NO CONTEST.
WELL WORTH THE WAIT - HOPE IT'S NOT TOO LONG UNTIL THE NEXT! July 19, 2008 strudel trigg (HERTFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND) 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
Having read all the books in this series, this is an excellent read. When it arrived, I tried to save it for a week or so to no avail! So well researched and written that you just get absorbed into Lafferton and SS's life, family and friends, but with that extra aspect of detection that always brings the final twist. Can't wait for the next!
Stuffed full of interest July 18, 2008 Mrs. Katharine Kirby (HELSTON, Cornwall United Kingdom) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
This detective based series is gathering force at a great pace. Do read it all in one go and enjoy the ride. Almost too much to think about and a very very sad passage which I will remember for a long time - it brought real tears to my eyes. I feel a part of this Lafferton world and certainly I am pleased that there is more to come. Just a tiny criticism - a few loose ends left straggling about - no need to over egg the pudding Ms Hill - it's fine as it is!
