Good introduction to project management September 1, 2008 David Cook As an experienced project manager I can recommend this book to those working on their first IT projects. It gives a high level overview of the key areas such as planning, testing and risk management. Although subjects are not dealt with in any great depth there is enough there to stop you falling in to the common pitfalls of IT projects. If you have more experience in IT project it may fill a few gaps in but not to the depth you probably require.
Insightful and comprehensive! May 4, 2008 K. Maroukian (Reading, UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Bob Hughes, Roger Ireland, Brian West, Norman Smith and David I.Shepherd have produced an interesting account of IS Project Management. The book refers to the ISEB Foundation IS Project Management certificate which I passed using this book. It could well refer to individuals who simply wish to understand the basics in IS project management. There are eight chapters to read namely: 1) Projects and project work (project management and development lifecycle) 2) Project planning (product flow diagram, activity planning, resource allocation) 3) Monitoring and control (monitoring progress, purpose and types of of reporting, corrective action) 4) Change control and configuration control (roles and responsibilities) 5) Quality (Quality control vs Quality assurance, dynamic testing, ISO 9001:2000) 6) Estimating (various approaches are explained) 7) Risk (risk assessment, risk management, risk monitoring) 8) Project organization (programmes and projects, identifying stakeholders, project support office, matrix management, team building and dynamics, management styles) Throughout the chapters there are a number of illustrations which depict the essence of best practices stated. There is a plan to the learning material explained which shows that there is a connection between all chapters. I would highly recommend this book to every IT professional interested in IS project management.
Fantastic primer for anyone starting in Project Management May 16, 2007 Karl Grocock (Nottingham, England) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
A fantastic easy read introduction to Project Management. Allowed most of my direct report Project Managers to get to grips with the basis and be just using this book got on and passed the ISEB IS Project Management qualification as well. Great for anyone considering taking up Project Management or in the early years of their project management career. Nothing really here for the experienced professional but excellent value if you want to accredit your learning with a qualification. Just shy of 5 stars as it's a work related book and not one I'd read for pleasure.
