Very dissapointing October 8, 2004 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was really dissapointed by this book. It has a lot of pages, but it does not tell you very much. Michael Dean only touches the surface of the subjects he included in the book and the overall message is "Just go out there and try it. You have to figure this out by yourself." The biggest problem is that everything is told by someone who has made 1 (not very good) documentary and talks about filmmaking as if he were a veteran (and an independent artist, which basically means he borrows money from everybody he can to move around and point his camera at everything that moves). When you watch the videos included on the cd-rom you know for sure: this is an amateur and do you really want to be in a film school that has no professionals as teachers? A good book for creative family video making, not for aspiring indy film makers.I'm waiting for the delivery of "Raindance Producers' Lab: Lo-to-No Budget Filmmaking" now.
Fantastic! Filmmaking with a punk attitude June 5, 2004 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Having just bought a digital camcorder, I found this book by accident. It was exactly what I was looking for. Michael W. Dean talks you through everything he did to make and distibute his film, DIY or DIE (also recommended). Apart from being full of helpful advice and tips on filmmaking, this film is also a little like a self-help book. It helps you to realise your projects and shows you how to organise and prioritise what you need to do to get your film made. His point is, start filming, and start today. The book also includes a CD ROM with lots of helpful software trials, sample movie clips and adaptable documents. The best film I've read on filmmaking, and one I pick up again and again for encouragement. If you want to make films, I can't recommend it highly enough.
