Just previewed on Google books January 10, 2008 Mr. D. P. Weston And it's got some great tutorials to get a newbie started with MAX, the examples only go so far from what i can see (Some pages are missing on the preview, so how much further I'm unsure) But I've seen enough to know it gives the reader valuable ideas, help and a better understanding. I'm going to invest right now Mainly because it will make a nice reference for me... I have been using MAX/MSP for 3 years now and I am studying music technology for my degree, I have lessons in MAX/MSP every week and this book covers what you need to know, experienced Max users won't find much use to be honest from what i can tell. As people have said it doesn't go into MSP (Max Signal Processing) But the stuff that is explained is still very valuable, you can't make anything any good without using most these techniques, I mean even if you work in MSP you still need most of the basic functions from Max. Also the ideas can easily be manipulated for creating Algorithms... Also the book helps with remembering the order of the Variables (I hate how max don't let you assign these things independently) I am giving it 5 stars even though I've not got the book yet, because it is clearly written... But advanced users I would consider buying a good DSP book or something instead.
Very good but only relevent to Max and not Msp July 27, 2005 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This book is in great need of expanding upon. It only cover the Max (midi) environment and not Msp (audio processing). A bit of a disapointment but I'm sure this book is good for anyone currently interested in the midi side of things. It will still be useful for providing a good basis for MaxMsp as a whole.
A perfect companion for Max users on all levels. May 5, 1998 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
This book gives one a clear and inspiring view into the Max language and the wide scope of work being done with this Macintosh software. My only regret is that I don't own two copies, one for the studio and one to read at home.
