Great for beginners May 20, 2008 B. Sizer (Nottingham, UK) I think this book gives a well-rounded introduction to making good recordings with limited equipment or expertise. It covers many things, from correctly setting up the signal chain, to suggestions on separating instruments in the mix, to how several well known effects work. Pretty much everything of importance is touched upon. However I think that in this day and age, with so many people using sequencer software for their recordings, the book probably didn't need to spend so long talking about mixers and how to bounce tracks to save space, for example. Perhaps the space could have been better used by listing some free or cheap software that can be very useful to those on a budget, or indeed noting which hardware gives the most bang for the buck. In summary, this book offers a lot of well-written advice at a very reasonable price. Just be prepared to do a bit of research into what hardware and software is most appropriate at your price range, and then employ the tips in this book to make the most of it.
Amazing June 28, 2007 Ac Howle (UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This book is a fantastic read which really helps to focus a would-be audio engineer on the basic concepts and approaches needed to get tracking.
About Time September 27, 2006 Blunderwoman (London UK) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
After 10 years of trying to get my head around Compression, Frequency Slots and Gate Reverb etc.. this book made it all clear in a matter of days. The writer doesn't do the usual "I'm clever and know loads of fancy techno-babble" thing, in fact he often pours distain on those kind of show-offs and poseurs. Having just applied his techniques to some of my old recordings, I was amazed at the difference. An excellent gift for someone if you don't need it yourself.

A superb book for the novice, everything you need to know to get you started. Easy to understand & enthusiastically written. Thoroughly recommended... indespensible in fact. If you only buy one book on this subject, make it this one!
