surprisingly in depth!August 10, 2004 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
A very good book that not only gives a basic overview of effects and processes like phasing, reverb, compression etc, but practical advice on how to get the best results using these equipment. It also includes a brief overview of mixing. It is surprisingly comprehensive and deals with most things.
I would have like more information on how to use effects like delay and phasing as it tended to just skip through these as most of the detail was saved for reverb, compression, equalization etc. However it does describe how these effects actually work, which makes it easier to understand how to get the results you want from changing the various parameters of the effect you are using.
All in all excellent book which should be bought by anyone considering making/recording their own music!
A good reference guide for the studio book shelf.November 13, 2000 candid51@hotmail.com(Paris) 9 out of 18 found this review helpful
I've got nearly all of Paul Whites books on recording and find them very usable and am constantly refering to them for techniques that seem to slip my mind somehow! The one on acoustics is essential if you're building a home studio and the full microphone techniques book (at around 10) is equally as good. He's a regular contributer to Sound on Sound magazine which is also well worth a read!
