5 out of 5 stars Favourite tale   May 4, 2005

As a child I absolutely adored this and knew it off by heart, and if my poor parents, fed up of the story, tried to miss out drakey lakey or turkey lurkey I knew and made them start again from the beginning!
I'm definitely planning to buy this for my nephew once he is a bit older, he's currently only 4 months! Hopefully he will love it just as much as I did, and as much as I will love reading it to him, and we can start our own family tradition.

5 out of 5 stars absolutely fantastic!!!   October 29, 2004

My son absolutely adores this book and indeed all the other books in the series. wonderfully worded and beautifully illustrated, it completely grabs his attention, and of course its just long enough to read before bed, so he doesnt have to go to sleep not knowing what happened!!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic story with bright pictures   June 24, 2004

I have always loved the story of chicken Licken. It is about a chicken who is hit on the head by an acorn and thinks the sky is falling. He sets off to tell the king and meets many friends on the way. This "Read it yourself" version has about 20 words on each page in big print. It also has lovely bright colour illustration on every page and a place at the front to write who the book belongs to. This is a perfect book to help your child learn to read with.

A well told, simply illustrated version of a classic tale.

My daughter requests this book every night before bed and loves to finish each page herself (although she can't yet read).
It's also not too graphic regarding what happens in the Foxy Loxy Family Lair at dinner time.

Smashing!

I personally can't quite fathom the appeal of the First Favourite Tales series, but my 3-year-old absolutely loves these books. Chicken Licken was the first one we got (a gift from granny, who was an infant teacher and has an uncanny knack for sniffing out titles that will appeal to preschoolers) and we now have 4 or 5 more.

The books are a good length and boldly illustrated, but I'm not always that impressed by the text and always change it slightly (I especially dislike the Enormous Turnip text). But my daughter is spellbound by all of them and often wants to hear the same story two or three times over. I do like telling her traditional nursery rhymes and fairy tales and love seeing how they capture her imagination. So many books of fairy tales are too frightening for younger readers, but these are pitched just right and I would definitely recommend them.
