Helped my daughter and I discuss the loss of her Daddy March 25, 2008 Lissy 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
An excellent little book that helped my then 3yr old understand what had happened. The notion of a 'soul' is touched on but not dwelt on. Mainly the book helped open up lines of communication and allow the discussion of a difficult theme, at a very difficult time. Very useful pre-funeral as it has clear drawings of coffins, pallbearers etc. so I could try to prepare her a little for the day itself as well as it helping to prompt discussion of the day afterwards. The fact that different cultures have various ways of dealing with death is also touched on. Still read several times a week at my daughters request, she seems to find its simple terms a comfort.

I'm doing a degree in child studies in Liverpool, and one of the modules is about helping young children deal with death, loss and grief. This book is a good one in explaining death to children, the fact that the body stops working, but do children really understand the concept of a soul? All in all, good book and will be using it as an example for presentation.
