Pleasurable and absorbing July 28, 2008 Mrs. Katharine Kirby (HELSTON, Cornwall United Kingdom) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
A charming, enjoyable book with a thoughtful slant on morals and kindness. The slips between two time periods were handled proficiently and without jarring. For me it was a relaxing, happy read with much to feel at home with. I live near the area and the descriptions of the lanes, villages and people were all well drawn. Not a book to discuss at length but one to pass on to a friend with the knowledge that you are giving them a treat.
Nothing special- borrow it, don't buy it!! July 26, 2008 Debs 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a very average book- the type of story you have read a dozen times before. A beautiful heroine on the rebound tries to write a book and 'find herself' in remote Cornish village. Two men fall in love with her then the dastardly ex wants her back... Ooh, what is going to happen, who will she choose? Who really cares?? Oh, and a flimsy sub-plot involving a beautiful servant girl...Very disappointing.
One dimensional characters July 17, 2008 Herman Melville 1 out of 7 found this review helpful
I was disappointed with this book given the previous reviews. I found non of the characters engaging and the plot beyond predictable.
Amazing!!! March 2, 2008 A. Mawson (England) 25 out of 28 found this review helpful
I read this book because i was getting bored with the usual girly reads and i'm so glad i did! This book is amazing. The descriptions are fantastic, not too long that you get bored but so accurate you can picture yourself driving through cornwall and digging the garden with them! I love cornwall so the combination of the area and the history behind the house is great. I loved the way the book goes between the past history of pearl, the hidden secrets behind their lives and the love story interlinking it all! The final chapter was enough to make me reach for the tissue box! A great read which leaves you wanting more and more! Read it cause you'll love it!
Well worth reading October 16, 2007 B4 member (UK) 38 out of 40 found this review helpful
Despite an intriguing premise I was a little bit dubious as to how two sets of characters divided by a century might gel to a satisfactory conclusion. I need not have worried. The story tracks the fortunes of Mel Pentreath, a lecturer who takes a sabbatical from her job in London to go to write and heal her emotional wounds in Cornwall. A love story at its best. As a reader I found myself captivated by the story to find who, if anyone would win Mel's heart as she finds herself confronted with potential male suitors - both past and present. The story of Pearl, set one hundred years earlier is equally enchanting. A fantastic read, great characterisation, truly unputdownable. One of those books that stays with you long after you finish reading it.
