Highly recommendable collection August 21, 2004 Christian Spriet (Bruges, Belgium) "War is merely like a picknick; the only thing it lacks is the objectlessness of a picknick." This early FWW statement by Julien Grenfell is a typical epitome of how impetuously the sons of the happy few marched off to war. It took some time before the rashness of the jingoism was steamrollered away along with the picknicking and sporting metaphors into the existential hopelessness of a war of attrition. This collection of poetry and painting follows the same line, moving from captions'Home and Abroad', 'Courage and chivalry' to 'bitterness and rage' and 'Compassion and reconciliation'. It is remarkable to notice the parallellism appearing in the visual arts, which develops from pastoralism (serenity) to bitterness and emotional torture. The anthology also devotes due attention to the female voice, with moving lines on dreams, hopes and despair. A book to cherish as well as to glance through.
