A small book with beautiful pictures February 12, 2000 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Russell Ash manages to combine an interesting summary of the artist's life and a selection of some of Alma-Tadema's beautiful pictures, concentrating especially on the roman bath paintings. The reproductions are full of light and colour.A larger array of pictures would have been even better, but all in all a good starting point to further reading on Alma-Tadema.
Eye Candy August 6, 1999 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
These are gorgeous reproductions of some of the most technically adept and intellectually hollow art imaginable. You can't help but admire Alma-Tadema's virtuosity, even as you wonder why on earth he went to all the trouble. Maybe, like that other popular artist British knight, Sir Elton John, Sir Lawrence knew what struck the public's fancy, and was content to make a lot of money by devoting his considerable talents and energy to providing it.
A guilty pleasure July 3, 1999 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Alma Tadema is not nearly as well-regarded as others who painted in the same era, but there is something about his work that is compelling. This book is nicely done and a real value.
Excellent book, well written April 12, 1999 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Beautiful picture and interesting text. An excellent read for all Pre Raphaelite fans.
A beautiful book for the price! March 24, 1999 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The color plates included are of Tadema's most popular pieces. The size and brilliance of the plates in this book are beautifully presented. At this time, there isn't a better value available of this incredible artist's work.
