In hindsight, this can quite clearly be seen as having been overhyped - as in "the greatest story ever told." However, it must be said that it does drag in patches, the plotline is episodic, and several of the less prominent characters in the first section are somewhat two-dimensional. In spite of this, it still manages to rumble along. The writing style, unique amongst today's novels, takes some getting used to, but in areas it can provide a thoroughly entertaining read. The closing chapters are truly one of a kind. [...]
