The Man behind the Alchemist December 20, 2007 Iago Zabibha (Worcester United Kingdom) If you want to find out more about the man behind The Alchemist, possibly the best selling living author and modern sage, this is the book for you. Juan Arias gently draws out what shaped Paulo Coelho. Like many of his books, his life story is like a journey, through many experiences including a Jesuit education, dalliances with atheism, black magic, kidnappings, to his life transforming pilgrimage to Santiago del Compostella. Paulo Coelho is very honest in his replies exposing his weaknesses as well as his strengths.
An intimate look at the man behind the novels September 11, 2002 26 out of 26 found this review helpful
Paulo Coelho is my favourite novelist. Having read all of his books, I was intrigued to be able to have the opportunity to find out more about the man. The biography's structure follows the conversation between Coelho and Arias. It is divided into different sections; "Magic" and "The Writer" being only two examples. Each section is briefly introduced before the main body of the conversations. The reason why I only awarded 4 stars for this book, is because there are times when I would have liked Arias to have developed Coelho's responses to the questions. Otherwise, I really can't fault this book. Anyone wanting to find out more about Coelho really won't be disappointed. I have to admire Coelho for the truthful and intimate answers he gave. I certainly learnt alot about him; ranging from small details such as the fact he writes all of his novels at night, to more personal details. I think he has to be applauded for being so honest; many of the things he told involved intense experiences and emotions. The section on his experiences with black magic and his kidnapping are times when the reader is only too aware of the pain that must remain for him. But he also shows honesty in telling about his own mistakes, often referring to times when he acted as a "coward." This is a great book, as it enables readers to understand why Coelho writes about what he does, and why he does it so well. I can't help but like him more now that I have read this.
An absolute must read; insight to the man behind the books. May 29, 2002 PSF Veteran (New York, NY) 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
This is an absolute must for anyone who loves the works of Paulo Coelho. A wonderful insight to the man behind the novels. I have read all the books (in English) I can get my hands on by Paulo and wait with anticipation for the next. I have given his works to all my friends and it is interesting how each of them has fallen in love with one particular book. I am also interested in learning more about Juan Arias and what books he has available (in English) I feel that when one, as Paulo Coelho has done, opens himself up to a personal conversation, he must have trust in the author. Forever a fan, Monique McKenna
