| Customer Reviews:
The most intriguing and captivating books I have ever read. December 12, 2000 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Frank McCourt's telling of the story of his life enabled me to travel with him through life from a poverty stricken child growing up in Ireland to a young man who discovers the 'American Dream' in New York. I actually felt the hunger and humiliation he suffered as a boy, but also saw life through the eyes of child who did not know any better. His books are amazingly funny and extremely moving.
An unbelievable, sometimes hysterical account of life as was July 24, 2000 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I found this book completely addictive, and a one which strangely effected my life. In a world which is crowded with privileges and excesses, to hear the tale of a boy who saw the eating of an egg as frivilous was extraordinary. This book cannot be matched and is the most earthy read I have ever had.
An excellent piece of writing, witty, sad, but honest. February 5, 2000 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Frank McCourt's work is an inspiration for all student teachers, and teachers working with a mixed range of children. I have used extracts, and ideas, (simplified) from the book, as part of story time, and as part of the literacy hour. Year three children enjoyed finding out about Ireland, and writing an account in the first person. It certainly produced some lovely creative writing. I shall be in New York soon, and shall endeavour to collect material to further develop the children's literacy and Gedographical skills. I look forward to reading Tis, and hopefully using that with a very mixed ability group of children.
REALISTIC HUMEROUS AND HARROWING January 23, 2000 coxresidence@cwcom.net (BIRMINGHAM ENGLAND) WHAT A COMPELLING TRUE STORY OF A REAL PERSONS LIFE! AS AN IRISH CATHOLIC MYSELF I CAN RELATE SO MUCH TO SOME OF THE EXPERIENCES. IN PARTICULAR, THE TAKING OF THE HOST AND SPITTING IT OUT, I DID EXACTLY THAT MYSELF AT MY HOLY COMMUNION! SUCH TALENT FROM MCOURT WHO DISPLAYS SUCH COURAGE AND SELF EXAMINATION IN SHARING WITH THE WORLD A DOWN TO EARTH REALISTIC VIEW OF AN IRISH CATHOLIC CHILDHOOD
