Excellent - buy it! May 13, 2007 John Walker (UK) This, well structured book, is the first one that I have read on neural networks. It is extemely well written. As promised, the author takes great care to explain any scary Maths before we have to deal with it. For me, the topic is very complex and it felt like the author 'held my hand as the plane took off' (...into the 5th dimension and beyond)!

I'm doing a course on Neural Networks as part of my MSc Computer Science at Birkbeck College, London. I was baffled until I started reading this. The material isn't that difficult but this is the first book I have found that actually explains things.
The clearest, broadest introduction available. May 8, 2000 49 out of 49 found this review helpful
Most introductory books and articles I've found on Neural Networks expect prior knowledge in statistics and mathematics. They also tend to explain them in terms of a particular problem area or application (often before they have explained neural networks themselves - which is really confusing...:-)). This book, on the other hand, explains all the concepts and background to Neural Networks in detail and explains the mathematics and application leading on from this. Which means if you are not used to reading mathematical formulae you can still get to grips with all the material, but also you'll get a more balanced view and understanding of design and application, in statistical, biological, physcal, and engineering contexts... It's the best printed introduction to Neural Networks that I have found so far.
