Another Sitepoint success August 27, 2008 R. I. Davidson (Cumbria, England) This book brought me from a complete web design novice (not knowing what HTML was) to somebody who could happily and confidently code a website in CSS and HTML. It's completely focused, and while it mentions other web technologies (Flash, Javascript), it doesn't dwell on them, leaving more time to learn the ins and outs of HTML and CSS. Ian Lloyd is a friendly, down to earth author, which makes this book an easy one to read, and even better as a reference. Buy it!
Worth Your Money August 14, 2008 Gordon Heaney I'll keep this short - this is a highly recommended book on building a web site. I am completely new to this and was a bit worried about how complex it might be but this book is a bit of a God send to be honest. The great thing about this book is not just how step-by-step it is, but that you are actually building a mock web site as you go through the book. This was key for me as the other book I have goes into more detail on XHTML and CSS but it only uses specific, individual examples of code, not how to incorporate the ideas into a real web site. This is the winning touch. You can also download coded examples of every single stage of the development from the sitepoint website, including all the images used in building the mock site. There are some typos in the book, but there is an errata on the sitepoint website that corrects the mistakes. It's such a good book, I think we can forgive Mr Lloyd these minor lapses!
Understanding the basics August 13, 2008 Nicole Rugman Excellent book. Refreshing to see an embrace of web standards using xhtml and css. Also includes references for further reading and a very handy appendix at the back for the odd bit of code you might have forgotten about.
What an excellent introduction to xhtml and css May 2, 2008 G. Anderson (Kelso, Scottish Borders) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Well after reading the excellent reviews on here for this book and browsing through the sitepoint.com website itself with the huge forum. I finaly decided to order it from amazon.co.uk. I ordered it on Monday at 06.20am. It arrived the next morning. (Excellent service) It's only taken me until today (Friday) to complete the book and the website that you get guided through to completion on. What a great book. I feel as though i've learnt loads in just 4 days ! I've just this morning received my next book "CSS - The missing manual". Highly recommend this book
The only book to begin learning HTML and CSS February 15, 2008 armchaircritic (Wales UK) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This book is great for somebody completely new to HTML and CSS. It will take you through building a site painlessly. I can tell you that what you'll be learning is fully W3C compliant coding (as it should be) so you don't have to worry about this book being out of date or simply wrong. Pick up the free sample chapter on sitepoint.com if you don't believe me.
