5 out of 5 stars This is the new number one guide to digital photography   February 23, 2008

I have completed reading this book and have come to the conclusion that this is one of the best books for a comprehensive grounding on digital photography. The author attempts to cover practically all the possible topics that you could think of to get a good grounding in digital photography. In many ways he has succeeded!
Michael Freeman's Digital SLR handbook was my previous choice, but this book is easily the best single volume guide there is now. In that book, Freeman manages to cover quite a lot of ground, but doesn't do so as thoroughly as Chris George has with this publication.
This book is divided into a logical sequence of chapters, separated by broader topics namely; capture, manipulation and output. There is good coverage of composition, and the author has explained some of the more fundamental aspects of the art and craft of photography. For this reason alone his book stands out from the the other 'All in One' titles published. He delves into shape, form and colour in enough detail to satisfy the enthusiast. He also manages to provide good coverage of the skills and techniques used in manipulating images and gets into a good level of detail with regard to photo editing. His brief but informative chapters on monochrome and the use of channels are really enjoyable to read.
It is these two things: the coverage of artistic issues and the concise explanations of post processing that make this the BEST guide for beginners and more experienced enthusiasts.

I've read several books on Digital Photography and others on Photoshop Elements. Of all the books, I have found this one is the most useful by far. It is a nice thick book (320 pages) and the format is perfect. Each page covers a single issue (all grouped into catergories), with the following page showing great examples. On these pages you get a good overview of the topic covered as well as an diagrams needed. The book covers everything from what camera, to photography techniques, to composition, to manipulation, to output. It covers point and click and SLR, and gives you professional advice in a way which is easily digested without being dumbed down. It is easily the best mine of information I have found and I have tried a few.

The format, as I say, works really well. With each page being a single topic, you can refer to it at will, in this aspect it works as an encylopedia. It also works as a course and is easily interesting enough to read through, with so many practical tips, which will enhance your photography.

The only other book I would really reccomend is How to Photograph Absolutley Everything, by Tom Ang. This is more for specific information on a scene or inspiration as it has some excellent ideas for what to shoot. All in all though, if you're looking for a solid book, you can read to learn about Digital Photography, and one that you will frequently refer back to, this is as good as you will find.

This is an excellent aid to improving your practical skills and knowledge of digital photography, with easy to understand terminology and great graphical examples. It helps with white balance, raw photos to name just a few. I use a Canon EOS 350D, and as i am new to digital photography was struggling with some of the books out there, until i discovered this one. I cannot recommend this enough to both newie's and pro's.
Good shooting.......

5 out of 5 stars Great for a newby   December 8, 2006

As a relative newby to digital photography, this book has so far told me what I needed to know. Better still, though, is that as I've got more confident with my camera and try out new things, the book always seems to have answers to problems I run across. Not sure how advanced I need to get before it runs out of advice, but so far so good.
