Everybody Counts . . . or Nobody Counts August 5, 2008 Donald Mitchell (Boston)
If you haven't read the books that precede this one in the Harry Bosch series, I strongly urge you to stop reading this review and any others about The Last Coyote and go back to The Black Echo and work forward in order the books were published. You'll miss a lot of the character development that makes this such a special book unless you've seen a lot of Harry at work before he takes on this case while suspended for stress leave. As this book opens, Harry is receiving "counseling" after attacking his superior officer. Harry finds this to be like listening to fingernail scratches on a chalkboard. He's also having house problems: His stilt-based house with a great view has been condemned by the city after the big earthquake. The earthquake also shook his girlfriend so much that she left town. Frustrated that he can't work, Harry decides to take a look at the file on his mother's death. From there, he begins to work the case. It's a tremendous opportunity for readers to understand Harry's youthful years much better. As you might expect, not all things are as they seemed at the time of the murder. Uncovering the truth is difficult and painful. But in the end, justice is done. One of the beauties of this book is how much it shows about a range of emotions and motives that people employ to look out for themselves. In a way, Harry is an aficionado of depravity, it's part of being human. It's just that he has to stop it when it goes too far . . . or arrange for justice when the eggs cannot be unscrambled any more. I don't recall a more bittersweet story in this series. You'll be thinking at the end: What if?
WOW April 14, 2008 Clive I have been reading the Bosch novels in order and this the 4'th is certainly the best yet! This is a cracking read with Bosch on suspended leave from having a go at 94- Pounds and then using his free time to rennovate his Earthquake hit appartment and his life, through seeing a shrink as well as looking at the cold-file of his Mothers murder, some 30 years ago. The plot here is excellent as Connelly introduces strong characters and suspects including cops, pimps, budding policticians, and fixers. The plot is woven tightly as Connelly takes us on Bosch's mission with no badge or gun but only his dogged perserverance for his form of justice. The ending had a few strong twists that finished the book with a "WOW" factor. Great stuff.
Hard to fault April 9, 2008 one-eyed Jack (England) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is the fourth Michael Connelly novel, first published back in 1995, and like the three before it is built around a few days in the life of Hollywood detective Harry Bosch, one of the best-drawn and developed leading characters in contemporary crime fiction. It's a testament to Connelly's skill that while told in the third person the entire story features Bosch on every page yet it draws the reader in from the beginning and there really is never a dull moment. As the tale revolves around Bosch's freelance efforts to find out who murdered his mother some 35 years earlier (in 1961) I was quickly reminded of a similar kind of story by James Ellroy entitled MY DARKEST PLACES (1996). That wasn't a novel however, as Ellroy's late mother (like the fictitious Bosch's) was a prostitute who really was murdered in Hollywood in 1958. Strange that the circumstances and even the time span should be so similar. THE LAST COYOTE will be like a comfortable sofa, a perfectly fitting glove, a favourite late-night drink for all those who love Bosch and Connelly's writing in general. If you have yet to sample his wares then here is as good a place as any to start (it won't spoil your enjoyment of any of the first three Bosch stories) and if you've only read Connelly's more recent efforts then don't for one moment think that he's better now than he was back then; the fact is, he has always been great and he sets the standards for other crime fiction series writers to aspire to.
Important Read for Connelly Fans October 9, 2006 Matthew Thorbes (London, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Michael Connelly is writing one of the most involving and well structured crime sagas in the history of the genre, and it'd be a real shame for any fans of Chandler, Rankin, James and Patterson to miss out on this. The Last Coyote has tapped into the back story of one of Connelly's central creations, Harry Bosch. Suspended pending psychiatric evaluation, Bosch decides to face the challenge which he set himself at a very young age: Solving the unsolved murder of his mother, thirty years earlier. It's a journey which many, including himself, question as a sensible course of action, and the revelations along the way will bring him nose to nose with an old adversary, as well as to an almost redeeming revelation. While this doesn't have the dynamism and brilliance of some other Connelly books, it's central importance to the world in which his stories are set makes this a must read.
Compelling reading August 2, 2006 Flutterby (Yorkshire, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As always, Connelly has written a book that utterly compells the reader. For anyone familiar with the character of Bosch, this is a must read - a fantastic story that absolutely demonstrates not just who Harry is, but also why he is and where he comes from. One of the best.
