A very good who-done-it October 24, 2008 Barbara Rhoades (O'Fallon, MO USA) Each Mother's Day brings a call to Carolyn MacKenzie and her mother from the missing Charles MacKenzie Jr. It has been 10 years now since Mack first went missing. She plans to find her brother - dead or alive. With her father dying in 9/11 and Mack missing, Carolyn has had enough. And now young women are going missing and the police think that Mack has something to do with it. Carolyn goes back to the investigator that her parents had hired and asks him what he remembers. He does not believe Mack has a part in the disappearance of the missing women and looks into the case again. Carolyn doesn't stop there. She talks with the managers of the apartment that Mack and two friends shared just before he disappeared. They are very nervous and don't want her ask them any more questions. Nick and Bruce were the roommates. Carolyn had a crush on Nick but Mack didn't want him to be around his sister. Bruce is hostile to Carolyn. Maybe because his wife, Barbara, was in love with Mack before he disappeared. With all these possibilities, you won't believe the twist the ending has. All in all, this is a great book. Jan Maxwell is easy to listen to and does do a good English accent. Most of the other characters sound about the same. She speaks clearly so you don't misunderstand any of the words and you don't lose track of the story line.
Total Crap September 28, 2008 Kerry Complete and utter rubbish. The writing is appalling. I was reading bits out loud, amazed that any editor would pass it. So flat, lifeless and cliche-ridden. My eight-year-old could do better.
Not as good as her other books August 5, 2008 Tina Am I the only one who thinks that this isn't a great book? I am a huge Mary Higgins Clark fan and have read all of her books, however I must say that this is not one of her better ones and would tend to disagree with most of the positive comments made by other reviewers. The characters were flat as was the story, it moved along very slowly, it didn't make me want to pick up the book and find out what was going to happen next. Yes, it's an easy read as all her books are, with plenty of suspects to choose from, but seasoned Mary Higgins Clark readers will know that it's usually the person you least expect it to be. If this is the first time you're going to pick up a MHC book, there's plenty of better ones to choose from. Definitely not a page-turner like her other books!
Enjoyable as always July 2, 2008 crime reader (UK) This is a typical Mary Higgins Clark book, it follows the same formula that all her books do, but that's not a bad thing, she can always be relied on to provide an intriguing read that really makes you want to turn the next page. As ever, there are a whole host of possible suspects here, and plenty of red herrings to try and throw you off track. It's a good read but I don't think it's her best novel, I think some of her earlier stuff was better, 'A Stranger is watching', 'Where are the children','The cradle will fall' and 'Loves music loves to dance' are probably my favourites. I don't think there's ever been one of her books that I haven't enjoyed, she has always been one of my favourite authors with her clever plotting and easy to read style. If you like your thrillers gory then this will seem tame, Mary Higgins Clark's books are always very tasteful with plenty of murders but no blood and guts, so safe for the squeamish which seems to be a rarity thesedays, every crime novel I pick up seems to be more and more brutal and gruesome. At least there's no nasty surprises in here. Definitely worth a read.
Mary Higgins Clark where are you now June 2, 2008 V. A. CRAIG (Scotland) The queen of suspense does not disappoint with her latest novel, another one of her books that you cant put down. Great stuff!
