Another good effort...... January 8, 2009 johnverp (Budapest) In an interesting twist, Connelly puts two of his stand-alone characters into the same novel : Detective Harry Bosch and struggling lawyer Mickey Haller. Haller inherits a number of cases from a lawyer friend who has been murdered. One such case involves defending a Hollywood mogul accused of murdering his wife and her lover. Although Bosch plays a passive role, it is an important one in the end. This book is as good as Connelly's better novels, but is unlikely to be regarded as his best effort to date. Again, the plot is sound and intriguing with plenty of twists and Connelly maintains his standards with his quality writing. If you're a Connelly follower, the pairing of Bosch and Haller in this single novel adds an extra dimension to his work. I am sure there will be a sequel or sequels, but Connelly has avoided, rather pleasingly, not leaving matters open in the current book to set those sequels up. In short, Connelly has done little wrong with his latest effort. 9/10
A Good, Fast-Paced Mystery! December 18, 2008 bobbewig (New Jersey, USA) Connelly's The Brass Verdict brings together two of his most interesting characters -- Mickey Haller (from The Lincoln Lawyer) and Det. Harry Bosch, with Haller being the primary character. The plot involves defense attorney Haller back in the courtroom after a two year hiatus. This comes about after Haller inherits the practice of a former colleague who is murdered. Part of this inheritance results in Haller's biggest case yet -- the defense of a prominent movie studio executive accused of murdering his wife and her lover. This inheritance come with a price for Haller, as he soon learns from Bosch that his former colleague's murderer may be coming for him next. Bosch role focuses on his determination to find the killer of Haller's colleague at any cost -- even if it means using Haller as bait. While not Connelly's best work, The Brass Verdict is definitely a page-turner with fully developed characters, believable prose and its share of surprises. Typical of a Michael Connelly book, The Brass Verdict is well worth reading. Enjoy!
Back to his best. December 8, 2008 J. Bryan (uk) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The pages just fly by and before you know it you are on the last page. His best book in my opinion was The Lincoln Lawyer and this follow up is up there with it.
My verdict is a five star. November 29, 2008 Michael Watson (Elland, England) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The fact that Harry Bosch was about to meet Michael Haller was heavily advertised, leaving the author's many fans anticipating another great book from one of the best crime writers currently at the top of his game. This book hits the spot. I thought 'The Lincoln Lawyer' brought an exciting and intriguing new character in the form of the lawyer, Mickey Haller to the front line. Connelly repeats this and the added bonus of pulling Harry Bosch into the equation is masterful. We thus get the best of both worlds for crime/thriller fans with an excellent courtroom drama from Haller together with the dogged detective work from Bosch leading us to an ending which is both surprising and satisfying. The book does stand alone but it does add to the enjoyment whilst becoming involved in this story if earlier novels from the author have also been read. It's not compulsory, of course but you'd be missing out on Bosch's unique character and his style of entertaining (for the reader) detective work. As for Haller, he remains an enigma; what happens next probably requires another year's wait, unfortunately.
Brass Verdict Wow November 22, 2008 S. Payne (somerset uk) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I started reading this book with some doubt. While browsing over the contents of a bookshop shelf especially checking if I had missed any of Connelly's books (not on your life)The dork standing next to me said 'He gets killed in the next one' I walked away thinking no way. Not Bosch not Haller. Unthinkable. However I have just finished the book and can only say that Michael is supreme. His obvious extensive knowledge of the judicial system in the USA made the book so in depth. Without going into the plot which was so perfectly plausable and yet intricate Michael has obviously laid down the steps for the next novel to include both Bosch and Haller. I do hope so. I couldn't put it down. Reading at breakfast, coffee break and while cooking dinner I couldn't wait to see what happened next in the courtroom. Fascinating. Following the Lincoln Lawyer (which must be read before the Brass Verdict) Michael succeeded at the very end to entwine both Bosch and Haller. An absolute must for Connelly fans. He never lets us down.
