Atmospheric Film Noir novel July 28, 2008 Ms. S. E. Hindmarch (London, UK) This book is set in the 1950s and is noir mystery story set on the outskirts of a seedy Hollywood world. It is told by the protagonist Lora, a schoolteacher who is suspicious of her brother's new wife, Alice. The gender subtexts are explored well by the author. I enjoyed it for so many reasons: the plot twists, the well-drawn female leads and the intriguing look at 1950s movie studios. The author writes beautifully - I would highly recommend you try this book out, whether you are familiar with the genre or not. I have also just found out it is being made into a film but set in the present day. How disappointing!
