A writer to watch February 28, 2008 mr-benn (England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Having read most of Christa Faust's novels thus far, one frame of reference keeps coming to mind - and I'm not entirely sure whether the author wouldn't take this as a compliment... Christa Faust novels are like episodes of 'Charlie's Angels.' You think about how every episode of that show went: someone came into the office with some mystery or other that needed fixing, and it invariably lead to the Angels going undercover in some bizarre, exotic location or industry: the circus, beauty paegents, fashion modelling, stunt driving, prison - the list goes on. And the central mystery, while not without consequence, was always by and large secondary to seeing the Angels trying their hand at something new and exciting, in a wide variety of tasty fantasy costumes. That's almost exactly how Ms Faust's novels work: they introduce the reader to some new, exciting world via some good old-fashioned detective action. Of course, unlike 'Charlie's Angels,' Ms Faust is not only unafraid but downright eager to get more than a bit dark, gritty and dirty, which is clear from her choices of subject matter alone. In 'Control Freak' it was the rubber-clad world of the dominatrix; in 'Hoodtown' it was a Lucha Libre fantasia. In 'Money Shot,' it's a world that perhaps more can identify with: the porno industry. What I love about Ms Faust's writing is the lack of pretence. After all, the first thing of hers I read was her 'Friday the 13th' tie-in novel, 'The Jason Strain.' Intellectualism, while certainly not absent, is not at the forefront. She's not out to write the great American novel; she just wants to show the reader a good time. Her prose is fluidly readable and dripping with wit, her content shamelessly titilating, pumping out plenty of sex and violence, while still finding time to carve a good story and flesh out endearing (or, as here with Jesse Black and co, thoroughly despicable) characters. Angel Dare is another great, tough female protagonist, the kind of heroines which the author will hopefully come to be renowned for. Ms Faust has grown with every novel; this is her sharpest, tightest read yet. I have no doubt that her output will only get better. But don't take my word for it, pick this up, and be sure to seek out 'Control Freak' and 'Hoodtown' too, even though they're a bit harder to find. Trust me, this is a writer with some great stories to tell, and 'Money Shot' is a great example of this.
Hardcore Hard Case February 24, 2008 Foggy Tewsday If you like your pulp thrillers action-packed and fast-paced, then you won't want to miss the hugely talented Christa Faust's Hard Case Crime debut. The murky world of hardcore pornography is at the heart of this pulsating novel; and that industry's trail of drugged-up human detritus is literally splattered throughout the story. Angel Dare heads a modelling agency. She is a retired porn queen who agrees to put herself in front of the cameras again as a favour to a film director friend. The latest well-hung stud is on hand to partner Angel in what she believes to be a workaday porn-shoot. However the shooting and banging that follow are not the kind usually seen on a porn set. A briefcase full of money has gone missing. Its owner wants it back and isn't too fussy about how this is achieved. Angel's life spirals out of control the way lives do when a briefcase full of money goes missing. Christa Faust manages to intersperse a lot of wry humour into the mayhem. Some of the porn stars' names that are dropped into Angel Dare's narrative had me chortling, particularly Busti Keaton and Heidi Ho. But this is a thrill a minute ride with Angel and her security man, Malloy, as they try to stay one step ahead of the pursuing baddies who believe that Angel has the missing cash. The violence that accompanies them is described in all its lurid and gritty detail. Some have likened this novel to a Quentin Tarantino movie and the comparison is not at all far-fetched. Fans of his stuff should enjoy this novel as will those who enjoy Hard Case Crime's output. Brilliantly written, fast and furious and highly recommended.
Pulp Fiction at its best February 6, 2008 Snapdragon (London) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
In the author's biog, Quentin Tarantino is said to have described Christa Faust as 'a Veronica in a world of Betties.' This is hardly a surprise when you realise that 'Money Shot' has a plot very much like one of his films. Angel Dare is an ex porn star who is tempted into doing one last job by an old friend. Only things aren't quite as they seem. Angel is lured into a trap, where unpleasant men will stop at nothing to find a young girl who has stolen a briefcase full of their money. It's only when the people closest to her get hurt that Angel becomes determined to get revenge, helped by the attractive and enigmatic Malloy. This is really great pulp fiction at its best, and it doesn't take itself too seriously. Just for a taster: 'If you squinted it all seemed normal. Except for the part about me being and ex-porn star dressed up like a boy, wanted by the cops and on the run from the psycho ringleader of some kind of prostitution slavery racket who'd tried to have me killed once and wanted to finish the job.' See what I mean? Great fun and recommended.
