This book truly is "Amelia Peabody's Egypt" October 27, 2005 B. Chandler (Arlington, Texas) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have only read "Falcon at the Portal" and was not very impressed. However this book gives a lot more insight to Elizabeth Peters' characters and their environment of nineteenth and twentieth century environment. We weave reality with literature never really knowing where one starts and the other stops. The book is jam-packed with actual monochrome photos and sketches of famous (at the time) people and landmarks. Under the section marked "People and Places" Heinrich Schliemann received a whole paragraph. This must make up for the lack of a bibliography and index.
A must for all Amelia Peabody fans May 27, 2004 36 out of 37 found this review helpful
A truly marvellous compendium of facts and illustrations referring to the life of the greatest Archaeologist or our age and his illustrious wife. Presented by a selection of authors, the essays contained in this volume will allow those who have followed the career of these most famous of archaeologists/detectives to acquire a deeper understanding of the life and times of the Emersons and the impact they had on the science of Egyptology. Some of the wisdom of the great Amelia Peabody Emmserson is also collected here for us lesser mortals to refer to in times of need. The dear reader will delight in the splendid illustrations of the sites of Egypt and the daily life of its inhabitants. A who’s who guide to the individuals that have appeared in the published diaries of Mrs Emmerson also appears here, with some rare illustrations of the persons concerned. Of particular note is the beautiful photograph of Rameses as a baby. I have passed many happy hours in contemplation of this most excellent of volumes.
