5 out of 5 stars MY FIRST COBEN BUT NOT MY LAST   July 4, 2008
B. Mehmet (London, England)
This is my first Harlan Coben book and I took it on holiday with me. Like other reviewers, I enjoyed the plot very much and all the twists and turns kept me gripped from the start. Unfortunately it got me so hooked I finished the book in a couple of days, which left me with nothing else to read for the rest of the holiday! For my next holiday I will be taking a large number of Coben's books which I'm sure will be equally as good as The Woods. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant read!!!   June 22, 2008
Gizmo (Wellingborough, Northants United Kingdom)
This is the first of Harlan Coben's books that I have read and it got me hooked right from the start. So many twists and turns and the characters just jump out of the page. To date my favourite author is Lee Child but I have just found another to add to the list! Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars engrossing and fun read   May 21, 2008
booklover (Ireland)
I always enjoy reading harlan Cobens books as they are engrossing page turners and witty at the same time. I really enjoyed this book and was always thinking ahead trying to figure out what was going to happen next. Definetly recommended for its twist and turns and suprises along the way..

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable   May 6, 2008

3 out of 5 found this review helpful

I will admit that I found this book utterly compelling and difficult to put down. Despite the fact that I had a presentation to prepare for today I still sat up until 4am to finish the book. I feel perhaps a little mean giving it only three stars because I was truly gripped by the plot.

The reason I gave it a kind of low rating is because it is very much a crime thriller genre type novel. I personally find with these types of books you are gripped by the ducking and diving plot twists and character surprises etc. However, I will qualify that with the fact that you don't really tend to take much away from the experience. I cannot say that this book is memorable in many ways despite the fact that I found it immensely enjoyable to read. It's a very strange paradox.

On another note, I found the main protagonist a bit of a ball busting arrogant twit at times. Although other reviewers have praised his character, I found his come backs and quips at times hard to identify with and this made him quite unlikeable. That being said, as a lawyer myself I found his quest for 'justice!' very refreshing given the complacent legal attitudes I come across in real life!

Overall, a good solid read, just don't expect to come away with too much.

5 out of 5 stars Gripping stuff...   May 5, 2008
LittleReader (Leeds, UK)
Each time I pick up a Harlan Coben, I am more and more impressed with his writing. I started 'The Woods' yesterday and finished it today - with a bit of luck, someone fed my family...
Layer upon layer is added to the story as you race through the chapters until you have no clue where the ride is taking you. The characters are well proportioned and likeable and the plot - that of a 20 year old murder and all the mystery surrounding it as it is thrust back into the limelight in Paul and Lucy's lives and draws them back together - is pretty exciting stuff. Some of the lines are cornier than a ham and cheese sandwich but can easily be forgiven as the story is so engrossing and the ending... Well, it's as brilliant as the rest of this book!
I loved this novel and I defy you not to...
